Input from those w/ campaign forums - private or passworded?

I've been looking into how to make campaign forums private, if that is what a DM wants. There are two ways I think I can do this - private or passworded.
- A private forum would only be visible to those given permissions for that forum. The drawback is that only an admin can make a forum private, and the admin will need to grant/revoke each user's privileges. There is no setting to allow a non-admin to grant privileges on a per forum basis.
- A passworded forum would require a password to enter the forum, and to post in it. The benefit is that once an admin sets up the password, the DM of that campaign could give the password out to whomever he or she sees fit. The password should keep you in that forum for that entire session (no need to re-enter it). I'm not sure without trying it if you need to reenter it on subsequent visits or not.
So, those of you with campaign forums, what is your preference?
