Here's an updated list of what folks are leaning towards so far, narrowed down a little more from initial postings.

VM - Elven Druid
Kar - Rogue/Fighter
Shad - Druid, Ranger/Rogue, Monk or Cleric
GW - Sorcerer
Top - Monk/Cleric
Mirg - Human or 1/2 elven Ninja Rogue/SD/Monk (in some combo)
SA - Fighter

Character Creation/Background continued.

I was considering a Fox Hengeyokai (1/2 elf) Ninja based on a Monk/Rogue/SD combo. Yet, I want to drop SD. NWN SD are connected to the Shadow Plane. Ninja are not really mystical people, for HIPS they rely on Flash Powder.

Rogue/Monk? Secret mission in the middle of nowhere? Unlikely. LB's idea of my character hiding sounds more like it. If that is the case, how to continue to learn the ninja trade (e.g. learn rogue skills)? Would my character then be Rogue 1/Monk X or even Rogue 0/Monk X i.e. someone who did not complete the training?

As pure monk, picking a few cross class skills (to handle traps and locks) may just do the trick. We could say something like "my first mission turned out to be more than I could handle." My character stole a "bag of tricks" (with some flash powder, caltrops, shuriken...) and fled to a remote area.

Considering most of my non spell casters are strength based, I will probably do something else this time (e.g. Dex/Wis based) and use kamas or a simple bamboo stick.

For my character appearance, I am looking for something like a tail, pointy ears, strange eyes, thick eyebrows or a little something fox-like.

You can say that you received training, but never got a chance to master any of the skills. Your adventures can provide the practice needed to hone your talents. Most of that can be handled in RP, you can manage the level/class progression any way you like.

Adding a bit more to this char.

// Hope Karvon will go heavy on rogue because my char will most likely be a pure monk.

Proposed Name: Tenko Kitsune (you can google translate if you are curious).

Background.

Being born an eta in the slums of Edo (or some other large city) Tenko did not have a bright future. At best he would end up pushing carts or if lucky enough he could join one the the Ya Ku Sa (8 9 3) gang in the riverbank district. After leaving and sleeping in the streets for years, he somehow got noticed by a band smuggling things and sometimes people in and out of the city. As he demonstrated some abilities he received education and training with Oichi the youngest son of the Oyabun.

After a few years working as a yakusa scout/spotter he was taken with Oichi to a secret location to join an obscured organisation that was reputed to exist only in legends. Yet, as Tenko discovered, ninjas were very real, very secretive and very deadly. They were not spirits or magic using people. But they had great skills and access to tools normal people did not know about. Ninja going on a mission were given a bag of trick including a uniform including climbing shoes, a ninja-to or other hand weapon, caltrops, flashing powder, shurikens and sometimes other useful trinkets. Using these trinkets at the right time and place was what made ninja invisible warriors.

It was the night of his first official mission. Tenko was wearing is black suit with his face hidden. He had his bag with him with a rope and a water proof parchments case. He and two fellow ninjas had to infiltrate the house of a local lord, some kind of daimyo and steal some important document. Apparently, a geiko (geisha) was already there as a distraction. It was raining heavily which was normal for the season. Things were doing fine, they had entered taking cover in the shadows and moved to the study room undetected. However, at one point something went wrong, somebody raised the alarm and for this mission they had been instructed not to be detected else, all witnesses would have to be eliminated. Tenko did not think much of that as the chance of having to use violence was very slim. When the order "Kill them all!" was issued he was already out of the climbing the garden wall. He jumped back, grabbing his kamas and moved into the sleeping quarters. He then saw a mother trying to hide two children under the house. He froze. Killing soldiers was one thing. Children? He was not ready for that. Suddenly all he had trained for was being flushed away like tears in rain. He could not execute the order or go back where he would face execution. So he fled never to return...

Weeks later he reached a village where there was a monastery where he could hide. He found a large rock near the river under an old flamboyant tree where he buried his ninja gear and everything else to appear like a simple farmboy. He then went to the village...

//I can go as heavy on rogue skills as needed; I'm probably going about 3/1 fighter/rogue and leaning towards human, or possibly dwarf if no other's play one.

Tsun Houjih didn't know much of his past. He was left on the doorstop of Master Wang Yen, a reclusive wu jin living in the forest outside of a small village. Master Wang told Tsun that when he found him, he was lying in a bread basked wrapped up in a cloth with only note bearing his name. Master Wang took Tsun in because he could feel the natural power emanating from the child and wanted to train Tsun less he did something stupid like burn down the forest Master Wang lived in.

Tsun had a busy childhood. Master Wang taught him how to harness his magic and focus it into spells. Unlike his master, Tsun had no need to study books or scrolls to learn a spell: once he was shown it, he instinctively understood how to cast it. He had to be careful because expending too much power without resting would leave him exhausted and, in the worse cases, near death. He learned this lesson the hard way as one time when he was but a teenager, he tried to impress one of the local girls from the village and collapsed after he did one "trick" too many. He was in a coma for a week and after he recovered, his master made him promise to never expend his gifts in such a foolish manner again. Tsun made that vow and has stuck to it ever since.

Now Tsun is once again at the village, but this time as a young man who wishes to see the world and learn of his place in it. Master Wang has taught Tsun all he can, so now it is up to Tsun to decide how he wishes to live his life. He knows his master's door is always open, but he must make his own way in this new world and he's determined to try.

Here are the bios of some local villagers that you can use in building your character backgrounds. This information would be known to everyone who lives in the village; outsiders might know some of it unless you are literally showing up for the first time at the start of Session 1.

* * *

Farmer Zhou: Zhou is a fairly prosperous man, the owner of a small hut, two fields, six chickens, and two oxen. He's utterly straightforward and uncomplicated in his world view.

Zhou An: Zhou's wife is still fairly attractive, despite her advancing years.

Farmer Tu: Tu is young and brash. His strength is an asset, and he often helps at the mill or with physical labor for Lady Jiang, but with his mouth it's no surprise that he's still single.

Farmer Sun: Sun is one of the older members of the village community, and is fairly quiet among strangers.

Sun Jie Ning: Sun's wife is something of a gossip, and lets few details of life in the village escape her notice.

Xiu-Ying: Xiu-Ying was orphaned at a young age, and is now the adopted daughter of Widow Lu, helping to run the common hall. Tu was interested in marrying her at some point, but Widow Lu refused, observing that the youth's temper would be an ill match for the soft-spoken woman. Currently, Widow Lu is trying to negotiate with matrons in other villages to find a suitable husband for the young woman.

Widow Lu: Widow Lu was married at a very young age (15) and was widowed only three years later. Rather than remarry as custom dictated, she elected to take on the black veil of the lifelong widow, dedicating herself to her community and to the spirit of her dead husband. She now maintains the common hall of the village, and few of the villagers are willing to risk arousing her ire.

Wang Sha: A moderately prosperous small farmer, Wang Sha served for five years as a recruit in the army of the local lord. Thus he possesses a degree of fighting skill otherwise unknown in the village, and is granted a degree of added respect in the village. His wife and daughter died of plague several years ago, and he has not remarried.

Mao Dun: Mao Dun started off well in life: his parents were moderately prosperous, he was smart and agile, and was well-liked in the village. All that changed one terrible night when his home was destroyed in an awful fire. His mother grasped him from his bed and hurled him out from a window; saving his life, although his face and torso were seriously burned. Now he cannot speak and always wears a mask to cover his disfigured face, but he is still respected as a diligent worker with a kind heart despite all of his sufferings.

Mao Jiawen: Most of the other women of the village feel sorry for the wife of Mao Dun, given his disfigurement, but she actually loves him very deeply. They have a young daughter. She is painfully shy, and some of the more crass joke that she caught her husbands mute-ness.

Old Tien: One of the oldest residents of the village, Tien is still hale enough to run the mill virtually alone, relying a bit on Tu or one of the younger villagers when necessary.

Menzo: Menzo is one of the senior monks at the Monastery of the Four Paths. While he is skilled at the five fighting techniques, he is primarily a craftsman, herbalist, and healer. His talents are primarily put to use in service to the monastery, but he will happily sell his items to anyone who needs the benefits they offer.

Ma Li: Ma Li is the humble servant of Lady Jiang. Rumor is, she's also her bodyguard, although this frail creature doesn't look very imposing.

Lo Pei: An aging shopkeeper with a colorful past, Master Lo has run the modest village store for nearly twenty years.

Leatherworker Peng: Peng is a leatherworker of considerable skill. The practice of his trade involves noxious smells and gristly details that require him to remain at some distance from the village, but he's a solitary sort, and that requirement does not unduly trouble him.

Lady Jiang Huiling: Lady Jiang is probably the wealthiest and most influential person living in the Dragon's Village. Since her husband's death in the last war, she has administered her household with skill and success. She has a son and a daughter; both are in service at the Imperial Court. Technically she would be permitted to attend upon them there, but she prefers to remain in the Village.

Ai Cheng: Ai Cheng is one of the senior monks at the Monastery of the Four Paths, master of the Blinding Fists technique. He is not much of a conversationalist, as he has remained committed to a vow of silence he took fifteen years ago.

Abbot Shen: The Abbot of the Monastery of the Four Paths is not a native of this land, but he has earned his place through a combination of piety and sound leadership, and the monks revere him as a holy man.

Gao the Hermit: Clearly fey-touched, Gao is revered as an elder wise to the ways of the spirit world... but most of the villagers are nonetheless relieved that he chooses to live outside of the village proper, in a small camp in the bamboo grove.

Wang Yen (absent): powerful wu jen, possibly mentor to one of the player characters (see the Player's Guide).

If your character background has you being raised by the wemics in the Wood of Secrets, send me a PM or e-mail and I'll send you a few more biographies of the major NPCs there.

Tenko was doing chores at the monastery when he was approached by one of the village kid.
"Are you Master Tenko?"
"Not sure who you are kid, I may have seen you playing with the other children. My name is Tenko but I am no Master. Why do you ask?"
"Hm. Tenko San, I have a message for you."
"Message? For me? From who?"
"Hm don't no. Did not see face. Did not give name. Only said to go to the bamboo grove after dark when people are asleep and meet there."
"Really? Thank you. What's your name?"
The boy vanished without answering.
Later that night, Tenko slipped out of the dormitory and left the monastery without being seen. He was not sure who wanted to meet him but he was a bit excited even though it could be a trap. In his mind there was no way his former Master could have found him in such remote area.
