"The Mountain King is still here," Moriko said. She let a bee land on her fingers and lifted it to her face, watching its antics as it ran backwards and forwards over her hand. "The one who knows he is king has not gone or the mountain would explode, but the one who thinks he is king has flown away."

"She-who-has-long-legs says they are very happy as now they have peace and quiet. It was disturbing the babies." She made drew a few lines swiftly on the palm of her hand next to the now stationary insect and it flew away. She smiled brightly over at the others. "I told her you said you are welcome!"

((I admit I have a leaning towards the morally challenged group as I've been considering a character for a while, but would be keen to do XCOM too having never played the original. However it would be very, very nice if you used the new D20 Modern LB so someone does apart from me! :D

It's been updated and - dare I say it - improved a lot since you did XCOM originally, as some may be prepared to testify. Loads more models for placeables, creatures and items plus extra tilesets and a fair few bugs removed from scripts and additional scripted features put in place. It should be completely reverse compatible and I'm happy to help set up one of your existing modules with the new haks and scripts if it helps. In fact I think I have XCOM1 done already ....))

Wen nods slowly, eyes on the sky... perhaps hoping to catch a sight of some great form flying across the early morning stars. But it's not the look of fear, but of awe. He stares up, scanning the heavens, all through Moriko's words. He tries to reply, but it's clear he's preoccupied.

"Uhm... she, she is very... very welcome, yes..." He shakes his head, looking at Moriko, and the others. It takes him some time to find his words, and when they come, they come slowly. "I have... almost no words. We've seen ancestor spirits, rat-demons from the earth, walking stone-men, swamp-hags and beasts, and those are things spoken of in tales. Small tales at that. To frighten children or... amuse travellers."

He looks up at the sky again, eyes far away, halfway between a smile and tears. "But not a dragon. Nothing as great as that. I never imagined. And... I have no idea how to even begin to tell anyone else. How could you tell old Widow Lu or Farmer Tu about this? How could you make them understand?"

"Tian, at first I wondered why you never spoke of this before. But I think now I understand the words of the Way when it says, 'those who know, do not speak.' I understand... or, if I don't, I'm getting close." He breathes out, blinking. "What else is there waiting, on this road? Could there ever be a moment like this again? Could it be... that nothing in this world can amaze, now that we know?"

"There will be a hundred moments like this," Ning said, somewhat absent. "A thousand. A million. All things are circles. But it may not be us who will be overcome with wonder. It will be someone else, in a place and a different time."

She turns to Wen; tilted her head.

"The Path changes all who walk it. We are not yet done changing."

// Oh crap lost my whole post. Re-posting the short version.

// Would be good to get general direction when separated from group.

Tenko found the wall and the fortress under it huge but to stop an army one would still need an army. Tenko was with Moriko on the East side. He went to find the others but only found the soldiers bored of waiting for them. He went back but when he came out of the Eastern tunnel Moriko and big Panda were gone...

//Gah! must be some sorta curse this week; accidentally deleted my long post just as I was about to submit it, so an abbreviated retyped one :(

The group reached the fortress without further incident, though Gojiro noted a strange raven which observed them for a bit before flying off. The fortress itself looked impressive, but the garrison and commanders left much to be desired. There weren't many of them and the officers seemed lazy and incompetent. After touring the place Gojiro found the others and relayed his observations.

1. The fortress is adequate for repelling a typical primitive barbarian enemy. There are no gates or portals on the steppe side, so the only option would seem to be an assault on the walls. This would require ladders and/or siege towers and given the scarcity of wood on the steppes, neither of these may be viable for the attacker.

2. The fort smith should be able to turn out a fair number of caltrops using melted down old worthless weapons and bits of scrap iron salvaged from less essential parts of the fortress. These can be laid in belts to hinder the approach to the main curtain walls.

3. Don't know how much oil is onhand, but an available alternative would be to mix sand/dirt with ground up iron powder and heat that up to dump on attackers via shovels or buckets. Blinds, burns, suffocates victims.

4. Bird patrols could make it easier to find and track the horde. They or other local creatures also might make us aware of any game trails that might bypass the fortress. Perhaps these could be blocked or destroyed.

5. The horde leader has displayed strategic awareness by contacting enemies of the empire and attempting to work with them. It's possible he has recruited mercenaries, such as engineers, mages and priests. Thus, he might plan on breaching the walls with magic or summoned creatures or with more advanced siege engines, ramps or mines.

6. The horde probably lives off the land and domesticated animals. If so, it would require a bit of grazing land and water to maintain itself in an area. If we an destroy or degrade such in our neighborhood, that would limit how long the horde can afford to stay in a region.

7. Not sure how many soldiers we have available. We brought six with us and only recall seeing 2-3 in addition to the 2 officers, but I'd hope there would be at least a squad of 8-12 present. In any case I think we should have at least 2 on watch along each section of the fortress, so six at a time. Depending on numbers we could have 2-3 shifts a day. Part of the off shift, garrison members would be drilled or on work details to get things ready for the assault.

8. We should implement some sort of alarm system using horns, drums, gongs, whatever.

Forgot a couple of other points

9. We need to pool what knowledge with have of the horde in order to understand our enemy. Are they human or humanoid? Are they afoot or mounted? What sorts of allies and creatures are working with them?

10. Gojiro plans to go on a short scouting mission for a day or two to get a better understanding of the local
resources such as grazing, water, wood as well as any sign of horde activity.

Wen listens to Gojiro's suggestions, nodding, as he sharpens the point of the fifth spear so far. "We may not have gongs or drums, but we have arrows," he says at last, "and we have fire. If we have the soldiers who came with us help man the lookout posts, two at each one, and one of them watch from the towers above us, they can fire a flaming arrow into the sky... and those that see it can rouse the fort."

"I wonder if we could bottle some of that oil, if you think they're likely to bring arrows... throw it at them. I think that might work." He nods, inspecting the spearhead and nodding, setting it onto the table and picking up a sixth. "You really think going out there will be safe, though...? Moriko was saying something about birds, I think. Weren't you, Moriko?"

((using those points in Craft Weapon I got! Trying to improve the spears, and make some oil bombs.))
