For some reason, when Eleni had dreamt of strange, far-away places and exotic peoples, she had not imagined blasted hellscapes and walking, maggot-ridden corpses. It was probably a good sign for her sanity that she had not, she supposed. The fact that she'd somehow found her way to just such a place regardless, though - well, she was still trying to figure out all the implications there.

Either way, she was glad to be back in boring, old, sulfur-less Mantineia. And she was gladder still to see her old mentor unharmed and unchained. She'd initially assumed that, surely nothing terrible could happen to Aristarchus, of people. The mere notion had seemed silly. But that confidence had quickly started to erode the deeper they went into the nightmare-land...

Ach. She had no desire to lead her thoughts back down that road, not now.

She wondered if there were any leftovers from the feast?

Leonaidas strummed his harp and hummed an old melody as he lounged in the shade of one of the olive trees. It was good to unwind and relax after the high pitched visit to Hades, or somewhere similar. The gods had smiled on them once more and they'd managed to find the old mage and rescue him from his prison. Somehow he simply couldn't see himself going back to herding sheep anytime soon. This was just so much more exciting.

Polytropos nods along in agreement, looking back to the old wizard's hut - wearing the same sandblasted stare he's worn since their escape from the dark world.

"Never going in there again," he mutters. Then, he seems to come to his senses, looking at Kataramene. "Perhaps someone in the village has displeased Zeus...? And they're taking it out on all of us until they make restitution. I always knew Medios would call down the Furies one day, but I didn't think he'd take us with him."

"Or..." he looks troubled. "Maybe it's not just us. Maybe all of the Peloponnese is suffering some curse or another. If all else goes to Hades, run for the Temple and pray, then?"

Now all I need is Karvon's. ;)

Damian leaned against Aias as the two laid in the shade of an olive tree near his companions. "Strange?" he asked in response to Kat's question. "Yes, I'd say the past events were very strange. I thought I would spend my days tending to the grove, surrounded by the beauty of nature, not battling demons, spirits, and the like. I have a feeling we'll soon face greater challenges, but that we will be the stronger for them. I just hope we survive to appreciate it..." He patted Aias' side and settled in more comfortably before staring off into the woods.

Who was Danae? What was her plan? That remained to be discovered. If it was only animals attacking people but they also met a prankster in the forest, a little sprite creature eager to play with travelers. Also, that winged lion beast could be a serious problem with his idea of turning unfortunate farmers or merchants unable to solve his riddles into snacks. For the time being, it was necessary to find Danae, probably another angry sorceress or witch. Unless...

"How can you find so strange that we had so many adventures or perhaps disasters to deal with in such a short time? Isn't that what heroes do? And if that is our fate to be heroes I guess the Gods are toying with us. We probably are on a grand quest to test our might. Don't you think?"

As they were exploring the woods near the stream Andreas tried to remember the last time his mother spoke to him...

"If that is the case then we have to be aware that the gods might play against us too." Katamarene warned as they walked along the stream. "They could be amusing themselves by pitting their champions against one another. Perhaps this Danae believes herself to be the champion of Demeter sent to punish the village, and calls the animals to aid her?"

"If so are we unwittingly the champions of another who seeks to protect them, or simply to deny Demeter her will?" Her dark brow furrowed a little in a frown. "Because if that is the case, we could be making enemies of the gods too." She sighed a little. "This is more complicated than I thought."

Polytropos had distantly heard of the strange Mysteries of Eleusis, the City of Demeter. Lurid tales of strange festivals and puzzling, foreign-sounding rites had filtered down to a mere murmured unease by the time any rumours had reached Mantineia, but it was enough to tell him that they were all pitted against the truly unknown for the first time. The behaviour of Poseidon and the spirits of the river had been understandable; the motivations of the koboloi and the sphinx had been simple enough to grasp. Even the mighty beast of the earth, unfamiliar as it was, had snorted and charged like a great bull.

But here? What other powers did this woman have, and what else had been granted to her by the claimed favour of Demeter? Though Demeter wore a less-than-fearsome aspect, anyone who knew of a mother's fierce protectiveness could gauge the strength of her potential fury. Her grasp was considerable; not just a corn-goddess, but the lawgiver of village society, the symbol of community. And with the ear of the God of the Underworld through her daughter, it was said. No, not someone you wanted to annoy.

Andreas's words and Kataramene's thoughts were gloomy, tinged with fatalism. But, on the other hand... "If so, the Gods might be scraping the bottom of the wine-jug with us," Polytropos muttered, cautious and aware of the many other scared people in the temple. "Being a champion of the Gods is one thing, but spending my life in beast-shape, slave to a witch, even a comely one, is quite another. Maybe if we can somehow get her to talk, we can figure out some way to placate her?"

Damien frowned. "I seriously doubt this Danae has the ear of Demeter. Those animals' minds were clouded by rage, pure rage. While it is true that nature has predator and prey, the predator has no animosity towards its prey, there is only the need to eat to survive. These animals are being forced to behave as a human would: with rage that someone would trespass on their territory. No, whoever this Danae thinks she is, she is no favorite of Demeter and must be stopped, if only for the village's sake."
