((Don't forget to post, SA! :D ))

So the companions were to enter the games, Damian thought. I hope they know what they're doing. Oh, who am I kidding? Thinking has never stopped us before. He shook his head as he strapped on his new armor.

He turned to the others, a slight worried frown on his lips. "We're not entirely sure what the others do that make them so difficult to win against, but I have faith in you. Still, be very careful because we've already nearly lost Tel; I'd rather not lose him again or anybody else for that matter. You're all seasoned warriors now, so show them the folly of standing against us!" He grinned before continuing, "And yes, Andreas, I'll find out about betting. Don't worry, I'll place most of them on you all."

He turned to Aias and scratched the bear's ears, "I think you should stay here, my friend. I don't want anyone accusing us of cheating and I don't want to see you hurt. The weather looks like it will stay calm and sunny, so the courtyard should be very restful. I shall return when I can." He turned to Leo, "Did you find out anything else, Leo? If not, I say we eat, then get to games before they begin."

"Good Damian, I still have some gold, quite a bit in fact, perhaps you can bet evenly on us competitors."

Andreas was not sure how that arena game was going to be. He still had that painful memory of the game at the village where not only he lost the race but was knocked down before being able to do a thing in the arena. This time he hoped that things would be different. At least if not a win an outcome less shameful was the least he expected.

"Are we clear about the rules? Those magic trinkets we got need to be removed? I only have three so it does not really matter for me."

OOC

Not overly concerned by the arena except for game lag as I am still with a low end machine. When we did the game in the village I think I clicked on my opponent (not sure who got the initiative) but what I did see was the guy running towards Andreas and knocking him down. I don't think Andreas made a single attack roll during that fight. As LB mentioned before Andreas is always the last to pop on the other side of an area transition. Any workaround would be appreciated.

"As I understand, you will be checked for magic before entering the arena," Eleni said. "I imagine they don't deal with competitors bearing magical jewellery terribly often, though, so perhaps that is something they will overlook. Though if they do, one wonders what other sorts of things they might be overlooking in our competition..."

"I believe we may use our own armour," Kataramene responded, catching the last of what was said as she walked in. Fresh from the bath after morning exercise, she finger-combed her still damp hair and fastened it out of her eyes with her ribboned comb. "In your case, as the belt is an intrinsic part of your armour - if only because it hold up your loincloth - I think you could be forgiven for wearing it."

Hair dealt with satisfactorily she sashayed to the prepared breakfast and picked up some fruit and yogurt then lounged on a couch to eat it. "I don't plan to leave anything protective off, including my bracers, if they are going to leave us using a wooden shield and a blunt sword, neither of which we are used to. They're the only thing I wear that's anything other than ordinary protection anyway," she continued between delicately eaten mouthfuls, "I've no jewelry that's anything beyond decorative, and the belt just holds my sword. My sandals and cloak could be deemed protective, but only against stones underfoot and the rain."

She snorted imperiously. "So if they're going to stop me using the truly exceptional shield and sword I have in the interests of fairness, against potential cheats no less, I don't see why they should stop me wearing the bracers."

I don't really have anything else to report about what I observed last night. Perhaps if you spread a bit of gold and drink in the local watering holes you can pick up some insight into this team, their methods and what not.

The wall surrounding the compound isn't terrible high and only a single guard walking each side, so it shouldn't be too difficult to slip up and over unseen, unless they have some magical wards of guard dogs I didn't see or hear. Perhaps I could spend a day and night inside the compound observing what they do and maybe poking around a bit more once they are asleep.

Damian nodded at Leo. "That's a good idea, Leo, but only if you feel you won't get caught. I don't know how effective of a rescue we could provide if you did."

"Ah, if there were secrets to be found around the city about these arena fighters, it'd be all over by now! For their secrets to've lasted out murder and scandal, it's got to be well kept." Polytropos cut at the air, circling around an imaginary opponent. Always moving in circles, in circles... "If we want to find anything, we're going to have to do it by getting through those guards and learning what's behind those doors! Preferably without being seen." He jabbed, bringing up his shield and curving away again. "Forewarned is forearmed, and even though I think we could beat these sons-of-harpies, I think we should get an edge before we fight. What do you think, Leo? You up for that?"

"If you can find out if they're cheating somehow, do it. Just don't get caught. There might not be anything to find though." he mused. "They might simply be better trained and better fighters than their competition... so far."

The preliminaries seem to go by in a flash, as the Heroes wait in the tunnels under the Arena.

Pallas's fight lasts barely thirty heartbeats. Those below can't see the exchange, as the young Argosian moves out of the line of sight of the tunnel, but the crowd tells the tale: a loud cheer, a startled collective gasp, a roar of release. You see the Hermesian priest run across the arena, then a few moments later the youth is escorted back below, looking dazed with blood smeared across one side of his jaw. He's a bit incoherent and doesn't seem to know what just happened.

The other prelims are quick. None of you are scheduled for the first round of fights, as the strength of your reputation has put you directly into the afternoon rounds with Eumenius's champions.

Eleni and Leonidas watch from concealment. They are able to escape notice even after Eleni's spell wears off, as Peleus's staff is quite busy. The door to Eumenius's chambers are warded by the giant form of Anaxus, and appear to be secured by a latch-bolt on the far side. Anaxus is not called during the preliminaries, and does not move from his post. What they can see of the room through the grate in the door is that it looks like a converted prison, with cells of metal bars along the walls. They overhear some snippets of conversation between Eumenius's warriors but they seem mundane, their chatter confidently predicting victory in the upcoming bouts. None of them appear to be gifted conversationalists, and it seems that the gods were stingy when it came to issuing any of them brains. Eumenius himself, however, seems quite canny. You only briefly see him on the far side of the room, pacing back and forth. He seems to be nervous about something.

By watching carefully they are able to discern that Eumenius's fighters enter the arena by the second gate, which apparently connects directly to the chamber on the far side of the door.

Something of note happens during the final preliminary bout.

"Lukas the Hebrew, against Bloody Haemon!"

The big dark-skinned warrior grins at you as he heads up to the arena. He selects a trident as his weapon. Again the crowd responds with a roar once he emerges from the tunnel. The fight lasts a bit longer than the earlier bouts, and you can hear the sounds of metal clashing on wood.

Then there is a loud gasp from the crowd, and again you see the priest running forward. This time there is no roar to announce the end of the fight, just a stunned silence.

Lukas is brought below a few moments later, dragged between two guards. One look at his face, at his crushed windpipe, is enough to tell you that this young warrior will never fight again. The men drag his corpse over to one of the small side cells. You hardly hear the sounds of the announcer as he addresses the crowd, but his final words carry clearly to you.

"Andreas of Mantineia, against Anaxus the Giant!"

ooc We'll begin there next time. If Damian or anyone else wants to go upstairs to find the merchant Hasdrubal to place bets on your matches, I'll allow that before we start. I'll begin Leonidas and Eleni where they left off but likewise will move them if you have another plan. The fighters will begin in the starting room by the portcullis.
