The group had made its way to the backside of the yakuza fortress and found the secret entrance unmasked by the witch's gift. Gojiro quickly picked the lock and snuck inside. A narrow passage would deep into the mountain sloping slightly upward. Near the end, he found and dismantled an alarm, then moved on into the fortress. He found a couple of sleeping sentries, apparently drugged or magicked, work of the the witch perhaps? In any case, he and Tenko silently dispatched these and motioned the others forward. The gangsters were caught unaware and disorganized. The team swept thru slaying all in their path. A couple of prisoners, a monk and a merchant, were found in a cell block and Gojiro went back and worked the locks to free them, once most of the level was cleared. Several final rushes were made by surviving yakaza, but the party dispatched them all fairly quickly. Furthering sweeping revealed no more of the gangsters; apparently the remnants had fled. With the fortress cleared, the team headed back to town to report their success. The governor was finally back and welcomed the news of the fallen fortress. They also passed on the cryptic warning given them by the ghost. The governor pondered their report and rewarded them with a new mission. Beastmen were reportedly terrorizing a hilly district and the party was to make its way to the local outpost, get an update on the situation, and solve the problem of the beastman incursion. Gojiro would've preferred a more tangible reward himself, and wondered what profits could be found fighting primatives like the beastmen.

Into the snake pit.

The group agreed to assault the yakuza fortress. The idea was to sneak in at night using a secret entrance. Tenko took the lead as he and Gojiro were able to sneak in and scout. The first room had a large gong handled by two guards. They were asleep. The two dragons easily reached the gong without awaking the guards. Gojiro made the "cut throat" hand signal. Tenko frowned and signaled back "you sure?"
Gojiro repeated the signal. Tenko was reluctant but agreed as time was of the essence. They then scouted a corridor with 7 doors. The doors on the left and right were leading to small storage rooms. Tenko fetched the rest of the group telling them to keep quiet. There was a large room behind the 7th door with a number of enemies. By opening the door the dragons had made their presence known and the yakuza were now approaching. In that narrow corridor only one or two yakuza could come in at once. Tenko decided to throw his caltrops where the room entrance was. The dragons were near him waiting to strike any attacker. He did not expect that the large panda bear would rush forward. But the panda bear did. A short fight took place in the corridor and in the room. The reader was found in the next corridor on the right of the large room. Having been trained by the monks of the village Tenko used his fist to stun the leader. The leader fell and so were most of his men. It is possible that a few managed to flee. The group found some prisoners and freed them. They found some treasure. Tenko grabbed the leader's cloak. There was also a mask that Gojiro may like (or any scout). Tenko retrieved some shurikens. They were a lot of weapons in the fortress including a katana they must have been worth a bit of money...

Tian made his way back with the merchant, it was more difficult than they had expected. There were groups of black clad yakuza leaving the fortress in dribs and drabs, avoiding them and remaining hidden slowed their progress considerably. Tian was confident the others could finish off whatever forces were left without his help, so he and the merchant travelled back to the town.

The slight woman wove her way between the trees of a grove, the lights of the village night now some distance behind her and blinking off one by one in the deep of the night. Her head moved from side to side, eyes peering into the gloom and walking with purpose as if searching for something. The time she spent walking belied the size of the grove and the further she walked the more the density of the woods did the same.

On and on she traveled until eventually she seemed to find what she was looking for and her steps quickened approaching a small glade, at the centre of which was a venerable sugi tree. Moriko bowed deeply and respectfully before the tree and when she spoke her voice seemed to have a faint, delayed echo around the glade.

"Honorable elder, this one is lost but my home is far." Her tone was solemn. "She should be in air not dirt and her chicks will be calling. Please show the way."

Drawing a bundle from her pack she unwrapped it from a shroud of cloth that might have been part of a curtain from the inn and reached up to set a stuffed bird in a supporting hollow between the tree's branches. Perhaps it was a trick of the dark but the branches appeared to curve and curl, twigs bending into the shape of a nest. Moriko grinned up at the bird and then bowed again to the tree. "Thank you! And I will!"

Turning she skipped back the way she had come, the shape of Master emerging from the trees to keep pace.

Wen seems... uncertain, having been given orders from the Lord himself. He readies his pack quietly, but is restless, turning to the others eventually.

"My sword already feels heavy. I imagined we would perform the service of the Dragon and then... we would go home. It is said that weapons are ominous tools... not the noble ruler's tools. I want to help people, but do not to be a weapon in the hand of another man."

Ning wasn't sure what they were anymore.

Someone had called them heroes, but that felt like such an empty word. Watching Gojiro cut down unarmed men trying desperately to surrender had killed the last of her naivety on that front. Maybe their actions had made the world a safer place, but they had not made it a kinder one.

They were following order, now. Did that make them soldiers? She didn't feel like a soldier. She didn't want to feel like a soldier. But then, what she wanted didn't much seem to matter. The spirits showed her the path, and she could only follow, a slave to the current.

On and on the river flowed.
