"Water said that?" Moriko asked and looked at Master. The old panda appeared to shrug in what might be a don't-ask-me manner. "Mostly it says ..." These words were followed by a string of sounds which almost perfectly mimicked the sound of a gentle stream. "And sometimes ..." Moriko then reproduced the sound of a raging current. "But every now and then ..." The following sounds would best imitate the noise of waves crashing on rocks. Moriko then nodded sagely with Master rumbling in a tone of assent. "Water is wise."

The group agreed to secure some rare silk from spiders found in a nearby forest. The trip there was uneventful, but the woods were literally crawling with ghostly spiders and their young. The party set at once to eradicating them all. Gojiro slipped thru the trees, easily avoiding the vermin, looking for their actual quarry, a rare larger type. He found it without too much trouble in the deepest part of the forest. He returned and reported the news to the others as they continued slaughtering smaller spiders. Engrossed in a discussion with Mariko, he didn't see the big spider bearing down on him till it pounced and suffered a serious bite because of his carelessness. That didn't really change the fate of the spider though, the party, with the help of his well-placed arrows, dispatched the big bug rather quickly. The priestess promptly attended to his wounds and he was as good as new. For all the work, he didn't get anything out of the trek; the tailor gave some sort of robe to someone else.

- Tailor Made -

The group ventured into a nearby forest to fetch a type of silk for the tailor. For Tenko this was better than staying in the city doing nothing but eating and sleeping. After all the forest was where his folks were coming from and he was always happy to sneak between the trees acting as a scout with or without Gojiro. The forest was full of spirit spiders of some kind. Some tiny and some large ones. They were not difficult to dispatch but they had poison that could drain the strength of a bull. It was good to have magic and healing kits to remove the effects of the poison. While exploring the forest looking for the component the tailer wanted a gigantic spider appeared out of nowhere and attacked. Tenko charged equipped with his two shining kamas but the beast was so strong that he almost got killed. He would have stayed there bleeding to death without the potent healing powers of his friends. Later that day they found a hollow tree with a patch of silk like material. It seemed to be difficult to retrieve the material without damaging it and without being injured by some kind of protective substance. The task required someone with great agility, someone nimbled-fingered. As Gojiro declined to try, Tenko retrieved the silk with ease. They returned to the city without incident and delivered the item to the tailor. Tenko was gifted with a new monk robe that had marvelous defensive properties.

"Why are humans more important than trees?" Moriko asked, a pout evident on her lips. "I don't understand." She began to tick items off on her fingers.

"Trees give shelter, and drop their branches for use, and gift their fruit to eat, and their breath cleans the air all breathe." She spread her hands and shook her head. "Humans do none of these things for anything."

"Humans take more than they need," she continued in an exasperated tone. "A tree gives shelter, they pull it down to move it to where they want the shelter to be no matter who was living there. A tree gives its branches and they cut it down to take all of them so it can't grow any more. A tree gives fruit and they take it all so there's none left for any or for seeds. Trees clean the air but they cut the forest down to build things from stone, which doesn't breathe."

"So," she threw her arms wide in exasperation, "why are humans more important than trees?!"

"Humans are -" Wen frowns, frustrated, trying to get his head into this new space. "Humans are important - humans are important, because -" He rubs his face, closing his eyes. "We can - I mean, humans can - we can choose, we can... move around... when there are bad things we can go to stop them, and, and those things aren't always other humans. We can follow the Way, and..."

Wen seems to give up for a moment, his tone becoming slowly less convincing. He pauses, takes a breath. "No. Humans are no more important than trees. But all things have the energy to them, all is one. We are no less important, either... 'All things look to the moon and embrace the sun. They reach harmony by blending with the vital breath.' So the Wise Man once said. And if all things are equal, then these people living on ice seem to be in the most danger."

"All things that live want to keep living," Ning said. Though she joined the conversation, she had a far-off look in her eyes. "All things that grow want to keep growing. This is not something that is wrong, or evil, but sometimes, that growth comes at the expense of other living things. In this, too, there is balance. Virtuous cycles of growth and decay. The river flowing onward."

Ning furrowed her brow, and turned to look at Moriko, her gaze piercing but not unsympathetic.

"It is not that one thing is more important than another. It is that some states and relationships are stable, and others volatile. What is happening in the north sounds like the start of a war, and that is among the most volatile states imaginable. Perhaps both are equally worthy of our attention. We do not know enough to be certain. Given what we do know, however, I still believe it is where we should go first."

"And to add to that, Moriko, importance is also a largely opinionated choice. The fact is the majority of those that can think tend to view themselves and their families or race as more important than everything else. For example, if a dog and a cat are both starving and suddenly a source of food appears, are they going to share it? No, they are going to try and take it all for themselves as they don't view the other as important enough to risk starving themselves."

Huo Da added after listening to the group begin to debate the importance of humanity and trees.

"This even extends to the kingdom of plants. Do they not fight for water and sunlight? Do not some trees grow in ways to ensure their survival at the expense of other plants? This is because they believe their existence is more important than the other plants. Now it is true that all creatures can contribute to the welfare of other living things, but they will only do so after ensuring their own survival for the most part, as that is what is most important to most things of nature."
