"I concur," Ning said, with a somewhat puzzled expression on her face. "Doubtless the forest folk will know more about what has been happening. I wonder about the outlander, though. He might be more than he appears."

"It does seem this will be far from the simple excursion we /might/ have expected... There are now, what, at least five different factions involved here. The Soldiers, the Forest Folk, the Thieves, the Outlander, and Ourselves. This has reached unfortunate levels of complexity and considering the more time we take the higher the odds the Thieves will begin creating stronger Element Men from the mines. . . Jya, we do not have much time to spare. The outlander is of course suspect, he is either on the side of the Thieves or he truly is simply out to seek personal profit during the chaos as he suggested. Either way that means he could turn on us when it suits him. . . But yes, let us make haste to the Forest Folk to hear their side so that we may begin making preparations." Huo Da said as he nodded to himself, satisfied with his analysis.

The forest folks were friendly. They directed the group to a nearby swamp where the master of the wooden soldiers was hiding. First they crossed a bit of forest under the guidance of a spirit folk. Tenko started to scout the wetland looking for a safe way to cross the large area. He spotted a few creatures on his right. The way ahead was clear if the group was able to stay clear of the creatures. Suddenly there was a male human voice calling for help but not one of the dragons. Tenko turned back trying to guess where the sound was coming from. The man who was looking for treasures got himself surrounded by wooden soldiers and other swamp creatures. Tenko rushed back and help his friends save the man. They told the man to leave. Tenko insisted that the group should get to the other side of the swamp as quickly as possible. They tried but not fast enough, another group of creatures attacked them and killed the gaijin treasure hunter...

Tenko continued to scout beyond the swamp and found a huge tree with a door carved into it. Then entrance was guarded by two big creatures. The group dispatch them. Inside four wooden soldiers were guarding the place. The group almost got wiped out during a big fight. They only escaped thanks to their highly talented healers. After resting a full night they came back and Tenko offered to try to lure the wooden soldiers out one or two at a time. It worked and the wooden soldiers were defeated. After that they had to fight a powerful spirit who was only defeated using Moriko's enchanted dagger...

Sometimes Gojiro wondered why he bothered scouting. It seemed much of the time, the others simply plowed full speed ahead attracting the attention, or charging into everything that moved. Most of the time, they were strong enough to pull out victory, but sometimes it really was touch and go, and they ended up very battered and bruised. With Wen the Swordsman missing, they got particularly beaten up in the swamps and in the tree fortress. They did manage to pull it out in the end, but had to fallback and rest up before they could finish the job. Another group of golems were dispatched, another misguided villain put down and not a lot of loot to show for it.

"Will we find out who killed his mate?" Moriko asked as they walked back. "That must be why he did it, so it is the fault of whoever did that. It was not the trees fault, and now they are safe to grow and grow and breathe out life!" She ran over to a nearby tree and wrapped her arms around it, leaning her cheek against its trunk.

"Now we can go and find the forest people and tell them everything is going to be alright, and find Wen, and then go and tell the soldiers not to be silly and to stop poisoning the water." She paused. "Unless it was them who killed her, in which case I might get a bit irritable."

This isn't my greatest moment, mused Wen as he hacked through another copse of dense underbrush. Again, he chided himself - he'd been deep in contemplating the art of the sword, the relationship of himself to the space around him, how to best interpret his own existence therein, and finally contemplating the shape of a tree, considering its form without judgement ... only to find that he'd wandered off and completely lost everyone. After hours of wandering, he had to admit, he wasn't having much luck.

There's a lesson in this somewhere, he mused. Taking a deep breath in and out, he stopped, closed his eyes, and listened. The chirping of a bird, two birds, three... the flutter of their wings as they sought other branches. The rustle of the wind among the grass, the creak of branches. The buzzing wings of an insect alighting somewhere... no, the song of a grasshopper. And another, and another. The quiet padding of an animal in the undergrowth, several meters away. His breaths were deep and soundless, his body was a stone. Slowly, the forest came to him. Time flowed away from him. Wen simply stood, and listened.

Finally. There. Voices on the wind. Different voices. A feminine lilt, a masculine basso. More than one. Wen smiled. He faced the voices, opened his eyes, and walked.

"I'm... not sure if things will be quite so simple, Moriko," Ning said, wearily. "Is rarely is. Now, at least, the attacks will cease. Maybe that will be enough to build on. I simply don't know."
