Heroes of Legend.

Having completed the "silk business" with the tailor it was now time to tackle the more important mission. Warriors made of clay, iron or crystal was a matter that could not be left alone. If some had doubts about where to go first, for Tenko it was crystal clear. Most people like to do the easiest things first and leave the harder tasks for later. Tenko was not like that, if the hardest task was impossible then there was no point leaving it for later and if on the other hand it was hard but yet possible to accomplish the other tasks for sure would be doable. In the case of the Magical Warriors, the hardest at least from Tenko's point of view was the Northern Path. First, the people there may not be friendly, even hostile making the whole task even more difficult. Second, Tenko expected a frozen place, cold and barren and last but not least his main weapon was his "freezing kama" that would probably not be very efficient against whatever they would be facing up North. He just hoped that one of his magic wielding friend may be able to put some fire on his kama(s).

As they ventured North Tenko was feeling like a hero of legend. With his two enchanted kamas (three counting the very first one he got) and his enchanted robe he felt like nothing could hurt him and that he could take down any opponent with ease. The first encounter in the wild proved otherwise. A giant animal like creature almost swallowed him and left him on the ground covered in blood. He got back on his feet thanks to the healing magic of the others.

They tracked the Ogre and his minions, some beasts, some men, some both, some ice warriors and more magical warriors. And again, Tenko fell and most of the time he could not even touch or inflict any damage to the things he was trying his best to take down with his fists or kama(s). He had to face the hard truth, despite all the mental and physical training, all the efforts and the few magical trinkets he now possessed he was no hero. Yet, after leaving the ice land on the way back to the big city he smiled as he realized that he might not be a hero and perhaps none of his companions were but together they were like the head and body of a mighty dragon able to overcome almost anything just like a hero of legend. The sum of all parts was greater than the whole.

Once more the party ventured into cold mountains, this time looking for an ogre leading beastmen. Gojiro wasn't sure exactly why they were there, but it didn't really matter to him as long as it was profitable. Enroute to the orgre lair they ran into a large beast that came out of the ground. Though heavily armored due to its thick shell, his arrows did terrible damage to it, aiding in the rather rapid dispatch of the monster. The beastmen proved to have very good senses and he had to be careful as he crept up and around them to avoid detection. They proved very vulnerable to his hit and run tactics though. The group confronted the orge in his caves, after slaying his followers. He fought hard and had some magical powers, but the party prevailed in the end. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to find much in the way of loot.

Tian ran to catch up with the party, having finished his errands in town. He hoped they wouldn't find too much trouble to get into before he joined them.

Wen walks with the group, admiring the star-metal sword as he goes. "Excellent piece. I see why it's prized..." He nods, musing. "They called the people of the mountains uncivilised barbarians, when we were young. If they spoke of them at all. Yet there was much virtue in them. More virtuous than many we have met on this road, for certain. I am glad to have done something good for someone outside the Empire, instead of fighting them."

He tilts his head, considering. "The Wise Man of Water's words come back to me now, words I did not understand. 'Behave simply and hold on to purity. Lessen selfishness and restrain desires. Abandon knowledge and your worries are over.' As someone who sought knowledge, the last seemed particularly strange. Is not knowledge the path to building upon the past...? But now I realise, that is a worry all of its own." He looks up at the walls of Jingsha, an odd look on his face. "Have we... have we built too far? It seems as if as soon as one builds a wall against the chaos of the world, that chaos will appear, no matter what form the wall takes."

"You begin to know!" Moriko said happily and looked at Master, who nodded sagely at the glance. "Knowing is what matters. Thinking means you look inside, knowing means you have time to see everything else. But to know you have to see and feel, walls don't let you see and feel because they hide it all from you and stop you reaching it."

Humans are too fond of walls," she continued. "They look at the wood but do not see the trees. They look at the sea but do not see the waves. They look at the sky but do not see the wind. They look at the prairie but do not see the grass. They look at the mountains but do not see the stones. The Wise Man of Water knows this too."

"He talks about purity a lot." She giggled as Master rumbled. "But that is because humans keep widdling in him."

Their journey north to aid the northern barbarian tribe proved fruitful in multiple ways, and yet they still were not any closer towards discovering the identity of the thieves. True, they now knew that the thieves were selling the knowledge that they had stolen. They even built that arcane machine for the Ogre to create his Element Men, which was what Hua Da had decided to name them.

But the question was, what was this research they wanted in exchange? It seemed like they didn’t want to use the Element Men themselves. . . Most likely because of the fate that just befell the Ogre.

“I see. . . Jya, that makes sense. They are giving the knowledge of the creation of the Element Men to others in order to better understand their capabilities and how they work without risking their own identities or lives as the Ogre just did. Not only that, but I bet they are having their ‘allies’ watched, so that when they fall they will know who defeated them. That way they can better prepare to defeat them later on, which in this case would be us. Or at least that is what I would do, in their situation and knowing what we currently do.” Huo Da said, to himself at first but seamlessly transitioning to addressing the others midway through.

"I... don't think the Wise Man of Water was actual water, Moriko, I... think he was a man...?" says Wen, in tones that suggests he isn't wholly sure. He scratches his head, listening to Huo's thoughts on the matter.

"All men are water," Ning said, somewhat more playfully than usual. "They might be many other things, as well, but without water, there is nothing to hold them together."
