The mission to snatch the human baron went off without much trouble; Darsin hovered in the back in support as he wasn't stealthy at all in his metal armor. The Dero were pleased to have their guest delivered and a bit of gold was passed around, though he wasn't sure if that was a reward or from some stuff looted by the others. In any case, they were once more seeking a route to the surface, as the previous ones used were now blocked off. It seemed they would have to dispose of roper who live right on the new proposed route of egress. Darsin checked his gear and supplies before sitting down to meditate for awhile in front of a small fire.

The roper did not last very long. The new road to the surface was found easily. On the surface they "met" goblins and hobgoblins. They had to kill most of them. Claimed another fortress too. One would think that Rogha would not like killing "her kind" but she was an outcast who had left her tribes many winters ago when she was still young and strong enough to survive alone. Duergars, Drows, Derros, Goblins, Hobgoblins were all the same to her creatures that could be killed if they were in her way. Her task was too important to be distracted by animals, humanoids or monsters. She had to study the stars, astrology, astronomy, chemistry, alchemy and all that. If there was a way to stop the prophecy that would be the end of all things she stood for it was necessary to understand everything about it and when it would occur. Now it was even harder. Her lair was likely far away and was probably destroyed by the slavers who took her. All her research lost. She did not even know how many moons she was down below and the best she could do was to guess that it was still the same season... Was it? What if a winter had passed? Worse, what if the Red Moon already occurred? Then "The Destroyer" was already "born" and the end was near unless... Unless he (or she) could be found and stopped before he (or she) could raise an unstoppable army...

The group found the giant and dreaded roper blocking their way, and chopped it to pieces in quick order. More troublesome were crystal formations that had to be cleared to continue. The shards from these wounded several and killed the big burrowing bug that was supposed to be used to create a sinkhole leading up to the surface. On arriving and examining the spot, the drow mage declared a fireball or two might suffice to cause a collapse, and this proved true. Once above ground, the party almost immediately ran into goblins. Things went down hill fairly quickly as their bugbear overlord had a grudge against our hobgoblin. So, we wiped them all out, or most of them at least. On the bright side, we learned the humans had blamed the goblins for our recent incursions, so our true identity was still unknown.

“At least the food Vot makes tastes … sustaining, even from goblin fayre,” Tian’ith commented, setting aside the cleared plate and utensils she had used to eat while her wounds were tended to. She winced irritably as Zau’lann cleaned the wound in her side and shifted her position with a grimace. “We have both lost too much weight recently ussta faerbol, and it is weighing on our capabilities.” She sighed and from her position on a cloak on the floor looked at the goblin bed deemed ‘unusable’ by tacit agreement.

“Not aided by discomfort throughout reverie. There has rarely been more reason to order thoughts and yet it is constantly interfered with by circumstances of accommodation.” Tian’ith added as Zau’lann, intent on tending to her, ‘hmmed’ as a response. “That need has been there since we met perhaps but at least we were able to do so in comfort.” She smiled wryly for a moment, eyes lost in some memory until his attention to her wounds caused further discomfort. Roused from them she sighed once more.

“Perhaps if we had talked more of those things, had more time to consider options at that point …” Her words tailed off and she shook her head. “Unsought as our company was, for a while I hoped we could find common cause. Some thread beyond the immediate that would make us of one mind and bring us all through this well enough to survive the vagaries of our ’employment’.” She placed a hand against his chin and used it to turn his head so that his gaze would meet her own.

“We can’t let history repeat itself so soon.” Tian’ith paused as if asking something that had never been voiced before. “I need advice.”

"Patience, mrimm." Zau'lann met her look, before turning to eye the others with something between interest and predation. "We may not have any 'friends' here, but none of these subcreatues will react well to a move on the part of our current matron. Should it happen, I sense we'll all be standing shoulder to shoulder - long enough for us to get clear of immediate danger, at least."

"Rest." He finishes attending to the hurt at her thigh, smiling at his handiwork. "I'll watch. Do the same for me."

Vot spent the rest of the night anger-baking in his old kitchen. It wasn't like he'd WANTED to take control of the old crew. Well, he did, but that was before. Today was just a spur of the moment opportunity. He'd given up on it awhile ago... or so he thought. This all happened so fast he was confused and angry. With himself, but mostly with Gurrak, that slimy coward. Ohhh, if he ever got his hands on him...

But no. It was over. Well, Vot would still kill Gurrak if he ever saw him, but he had to accept the situation here. Well. It's not like he was any worse off than before. And these ginger snaps were pretty good.

Ravillion lounged on what best she could find in the ramshacked hovel of a fortress, idly watching the others as she waited for Vot to finish her their meals.

It was both a pity and perhaps in their best interests that they didn’t gain Vot a goblin tribe to control, but at least they now had this fortress. Although the problem was the ‘they’ part.

The other Drow and her Male... they were obviously scheming something, but it wasn’t obvious what. The Male had tried to work to getting the Kobold and ryld to trust them, but his mistress had gracefully ruined most chances of that.

But for now they were working together at least, and for a while longer likely.

Miiq scratched Pohl behind the ear, watching the others as they rested. He had particular eyes for Vot, whose situation, perhaps, was not unlike his own. Miiq, too, had a tribe he would one day seek to return to - to conquer. But things would not be the same as when he had left. Change is the law of life. It is the law of survival.

And for too long, now, Miiq had remained caught in the same patterns. Soon, things would change. Soon, this alliance they had forged would crumble. That, he was certain, was all but inevitable.
