TURNING WIND

"The wind is turning, don't you think? I dare not say more but I think we understand each other which is a start."

Back in the fortress perhaps for the last time, Rogha secretly counted how many defenders they would have to remove if they were to take the stronghold back. Around fifty she counted but she did not count the diggers and other "creations". The big ones were out of control. The small ones could perhaps be turned against their creator.

They had a new mission. Rogha was not even sure that there was indeed a crystal and if so how Alzari could have been aware of its existence and location. Perhaps that was her way to dispose of them sending them to their death on some remote island. Or may be there was really a crystal that they could retrieve. Then what? Keep it and decide what to do next? Bring it back and collect the "rewards"? Take back the fortress in the process?

"Our next task is going to be very difficult. We have to be very smart. I hope that we can come up with a good plan, yes?"

"I don't know about any wind turning, but Alzari is lookin' worse for wear, and that's saying something. Looks like she might croak, even. Anyway, these masks aint fooling anyone who gives 'em a good look. If you want a good plan, less talkin' seems a good guideline. Half of us can't even get through a sentence without making an enemy, and if we're close enough to talk, we already made a mistake far as I'm concerned."

Vot continued while preparing some hearty boar steaks.

"We still got those paralyzing 'bug' stickers? Maybe we get in, scope out a sailor or two and give them a poke on the sly and drag 'em on a boat. Or maybe we get lucky and there's already a crew waiting on one and all we gotta do is walk on and steal away with them and their boat before they can get any help. Obviously we aint going in at day, but night is when most surfacers wind down and go into their cups or get to sleep."

"And what then?" Miiq looked somewhat irked. As he spoke, he used his claws to pry the remnants of dinner from his teeth. "We are in middle of sea. We come out of hiding. How we keep surfacers in line? How we stop from running away while we are on island, searching for Alzari's bauble?"

Miiq ran his tongue over his teeth; made a long, irritated hissing sound.

"Maybe now is when we say no. Maybe now is when we go some other place, find other cause. Obvious Derro are past sanity. Past trust."

Zau'lann frowned... his throughts both in the present, and in a far-off memory. He grimaces at Miiq's words. "Leaving someone at your back is never wise. Better to turn around and either cut their throat, or buy them off." He glances at Tian'ith a moment, before drawing his attention back to the others. "I say, better to barter this crystal for an end to our relationship with the Derro, and their assistance in bidding this place farewell. Tidier, simpler, and if they try something... if they try something, at least we'll know it."

"This is so, but there is s bigger question," Tian'ith replied looking at Zau'lann. "Do we come back?" She looked around their faces, though at some more keenly than others. "Say we take this order and are successful in both finding a boat and commandeering a crew. There is nothing to say that we return."

"Who among us has a tie to this place that they are not prepared to release?" she added. "Should we choose to move on together then we could do so by moving through the Underdark but do we have other friends here?" Tian'ith's expression more than hinted that she did not believe this to be the case. "Even if we had friends here before this by now we have few left. This could be an opportunity to release ourselves in a completely new location."

"Aside from which, this thing Azali desires may have value to us or to others." She glanced at Zau'lann again. "It would be possible to attempt to retain it. We may be able to discern its purpose and use and either use it to our advantage or dispose of it profitably to a third party."

"Either way, I do not think we should refuse the request," she continued with a rueful shrug and a grim smile. "No, if we are to decide not to complete the task then, given Miiq's accurate judgement, we should do so when well away from this place."

Darsin listened in gloomy silence as the others discussed the mission over the sea. So much water; how could the fire lords empower him in such circumstances? Perhaps this was some sort of test of his faith? He would have to prove himself worthy and press on, trusting the lords would be with him. Besides, he would be glad to be away from the impending insect plague he felt with growing certainty would explode beyond the control and limits originally envisioned by the Dero.

Ravillion offered no words or input and simply listened as the others spoke, her mind on more important matters. Her matters. Her reason for even being here working for them. She was beginning to feel her promised reward of the knowledge of what magi had aided her sisters and where they were was not going to be granted anymore, with how deranged Alazi was becoming. If so, what would she do then?

The Scrying Crystal would be important then, but taking it would require taking the fortress, likely. Plus it isn't like she herself could use it, no. That would require a mage of her own... No, things were going down an annoying path now.

THE STORM

Alzari did no lie… so far. Indeed there was a big storm protecting the drows from the sunlight and yes there was a coastal village where they managed to get onto a boat. It was a tiny fishing boat. Apparently the crystal did exists too at least that is what the hag was saying. They were now on the other island and their tiny boat had been crushed. They agreed to go kill some lizard creatures to lear where the crystal was. After that they would have to decide where to go and how to leave that island...
