X-COM: Aliens

Fast was having a slow day.
Before doing the previous mission (humans called it job) he had experimented with various materials to see what properties would be good to add to clones structure. Things like elasticity, resistance to fire, force field, damage reduction.
At the end some if his ideas were included in the final stage of the research although something went wrong with the console.
This time, for medical research, Fast pointed out that the equipment was too bulky and that anyone with large hands or claws or using a large weapon was unable to inject the serum or assist the injured in a timely manner.
Best would be to be able to apply something from a distance and use a small tool to heal or repair damaged clones.
OOC
To support the medical research project, craft mech: 9 (at DM's discretion) else Research 2

Re: X-COM: Aliens
"Something small that can just be slapped on," mused Nimble, listening to Fast's point of view and nodding. "So we not have to hold it and run around like that. A little thing that can give out a quick smack.." the clone demonstrated on its thigh "... and it all done. We try do that and try make something to make them faster too."
That said Nimble began rooting through the inner workings of - of all things - the CPU base for a computer, and dragged out the hard drive and a fan. It looked at them thoughtfully, then turning to a toaster began to meld them together.
((Craft Mech, again, at 9. I must try for other skills!))

Quiet listened intently as the others discussed the need for better medical tools, and nodded it's agreement. "Can we make the medicine administer automatically?" it asked. "We need sensors and triggers... and a harness to hold them." It whispered, almost to itself. It went to work crafting a harness for each of the different species that could hold medical tools. It frequently checked back with each of the others to see which direction the medical research was going, and to help where it could.

Re: X-COM: Aliens
The Scowling One picked up the thoughts of those around it as it worked, genetic sequences and chemical compositions bancing on the holoscreen before its eyes. To call it enthusiastic would be wrong; it showed no glee. But from the strange steepling of its fingers, there could be read satisfaction. It pressed a few keys, and laid human data alongside the original, pondering, wondering... thinking.
It turned its head towards the Pale One, similarly working nearby. Ours is not to question, it said, across the deeper mindscape. Yet there may be ways of learning other than the machines of the Masters.

Week 9
Project: Medical Domain Tier 1: Regenerative Serum 1
Carryover from last week: 8 (halved due to change in research domain)
Research Points (RP) Needed: 12
Project Leader: The Pale One: Knowledge Earth and Life Sciences 11, ROLL 3, Result 14
Project Support (all roll vs. DC20 to add +2, DC25 to add +3, non-core skills subtract 1 from the bonus):
The Strong One: Research 3, ROLL 16, Result 19
The Wild One: Craft Mechanical 4 (Non-Core Skill), ROLL 14, Result 18
The Fast One: Craft Mechanical 9 (Non-Core Skill), ROLL 9, Result 18
The Nimble One: Craft Mechanical 9 (Non-Core Skill), ROLL 20, Result 29 (+2 RP, and see below)
The Quiet One: Craft Mechanical 7 (Non-Core Skill), ROLL 9, Result 16
The Scowling One: Knowledge Earth and Life Sciences 7, ROLL 13, Result 20 (+2 RP)
Research Earned: 10 (base) + 14 (project leader) + 4 (support) = 28 points
Regenerative Serum 1 earned! Regenerates 1 hp every six seconds for two minutes (up to 20hp). Can only be used on self. Causes minor penalty to strength, dexterity, and movement while serum is working. +100xp for completing a Level 1 research project.
16RP applied to Clone Field Repair Unit project (30RP to complete). Grants access to medical kits (equal to a +5 health kit).
* * *
The Pale One again steps forward to lead the research effort. By now, the others have learned to follow, that their companion knows what it is doing when it comes to the research projects.
However, the work is slow and frustrating. The Pale One has difficulty understanding at first why this should be; the Masters obviously command a massive amount of knowledge on the biology of the species from which it creates its clone warriors. But then comes a realization that makes the clone scientist reconsider all of its information.
The Masters don't care about repairing their clones. For the most part, when one is damaged it is much easier to discard it and replace it with another.
The augmented clones are literally a new breed.
What will happen when their own usefulness to the Masters comes to an end?
The Regenerative Serum proves simple enough to concoct, and the Pale One is confident that other breakthroughs will follow swiftly. But as for the deeper questions, those will require much more contemplation.
Meanwhile, Nimble has an insight. Working on the mechanical aspect of medical technology, the clone sees how future improvements could be made (Game Note: the full Medical Domain research tree is revealed; see below).

Research Notes: Medical Domain
- Tier 1 (20RP): Regenerative Serum 1. Regenerates 1 hp every six seconds for two minutes (up to 20hp). Can only be used on self. Causes minor penalty to strength, dexterity, and movement while serum is working.
- Tier 2 (30RP): Clone Field Repair Unit. Grants access to medical kits (equal to a +5 health kit)
- Tier 3 (40RP): Regenerative Serum 2. Regenerates 2 hp every six seconds for two minutes (up to 40hp). Can only be used on self. Causes minor penalty to dexterity and movement while serum is working.
- Tier 4 (50RP): Improved Clone Repair. Upgrades medical kits to +10 value.
- Tier 5 (60RP): Regenerative Serum 3. Regenerates 2 hp every five seconds for three minutes (up to 72hp). Can only be used on self. Causes minor penalty to dexterity while serum is working.
- Tier 6 (70RP): Portable Rejuvenation Unit, Improved*. Upgrades the rejuvenation unit. Heals the dead clone fully and removes the experience penalty (per the Resurrection spell). These units take more time to manufacture than other consumables.
- Tier 7 (80RP): Medical Efficiency. Doubles the production of regenerative serums and field repair units, and allows the production of one Rejuvenation Unit each week. Doubling is applied before the benefits of Improved Manufacturing.
Re: X-COM: Aliens
+300xp for IC posting to Pale, Strong, Wild, Fast, Nimble, Quiet, and Scowling for IC posting.
+100xp for everyone for researching a Tier 1 advance.

Re: X-COM: Aliens
The mission was done. But it could have gone a lot better. Having and extra bomb in case the first did not work or did not blow up the entire facility. Having an automatic defense mechanism to protect the shuttle other than the self destruct function. Having something other than the clones to guard the shuttle. Having better coordination between the scout(s), the "throwers" equipped with grenades, the healers and the other clones able to respond to a threat with claws or weapons at close range.
Now was not the time to review these matters. They would have to but after doing more research. Fast was not very good with research but again looked at ways he could assist. They had made good progress. Creating a regenerative serum. More had to be done to make a better serum and other related tools for emergencies on the battlefield.
Was there a way to make a micro-pump able to inject serum in half the required time?
// Still on Craft Mech: 9
