The team members were told to pick a specialist class and collect the associated weapons from the lockers in the armory. Stanley casually looked over the various weapons stored and wasn't particularly enthused about any of the options really. Most of them were pretty heavy for starters and he wasn't all that muscular. Many of them required extra training to really use effectively and he wasn't all that interested in devoting his study time to such skills. He decided to let the others pick what they wanted and he would survey the remaining options. When the dust settled, he found himself packing a grenade launcher into this pack. It didn't need special skill to use and was pretty destructive, but was still a bit heavy and only included four rounds in the device, which couldn't be reloaded. Hopefully, he wouldn't have cause to use it.

They were sent to rescue a scientist held in an ADVENT prison in an abandoned sector of the city. Stanley cautiously followed along behind the others, occasionally looking over his shoulder. They ran into and eliminated a few ADVENT security people outside the prison before forcing their way into the facility. The team swept thru looking for the prisoner. Stanley stopped and accessed a computer and was able to download a considerable amount of data off it on to flash drive he carried around for such purposes. The scientist and a priest were retrieved and the team retreated and called for extraction. Of course and ADVENT response team showed up and had to be dealt with before they could board their shuttle and escape. A few folks got wounded, but everyone survived and 2 prisoners were rescued, so that, plus the captured data made for a win for the good guys.

In the downtime, Stanley continued helping out on ramping up production and joined in the planning of the next project of expanding the research facilities.

//I guess my repair of 15 is what was used last time. you can review the previous post to see my other skills if you feel they better suited.

(( Again, Henderson helps with Research with Concentration. Magnetic Weapons is the choice, with Officer Autopsy as the next one for the research project. Improved Manufacturing Capacity followed by Improved Research Capacity for the manufacturing project. ))

Things seemed to be going quite well, when you ignored the bad stuff like broken legs and the like. The mission went much better than the last one and they managed to rescue the scientist and a priest without them getting killed... although odds were the man was going to ask for his hat back. And Henderson was just getting used to it too.

The real question though was how long until things started to escalate. The old man could tell that these weren't exactly the most dangerous missions possible. Perhaps Central was worried they might get themselves all killed if he sent thing on a mission like Beta did when they got rescued from ADVENT's attack? Of course, considering some of DJ and Arsonist's recent stunts that might not be too unbelievable. Still, at some point they would have to poke the hornet's nest, although ideally with heavy weaponry or a LAW.

((+16 repair to help with manufacturing. Voting for the research upgrade as a secondary.

Looks like we're guaranteed to hit Mag Weapons for research this week. I'll third the officer autopsy as that way there's a decent chance we get to hit two projects there this week. Trooper autopsy in case there's anything left after that, as it sounds like that probably unlocks some potential armor upgrades.))

Things were finally starting to sink in.

XCOM had a lot going for it, compared to the hole in the ground Jesse and the others used to call HQ. The Avenger alone was like nothing else she'd ever seen. Like nothing she'd ever thought to dream of, really.

And they were dangerously close to squandering it all. Despite all their fancy toys, it felt like they were struggling just to keep their heads above water. No different from anyone else, in the end. The same problems they had before, just on a different scale.

Only now, they had the means and resources to do something about that. Dig themselves up out of the muck, before ADVENT tracked them down and found a way to bury them alive. She was the furthest thing from hopeful about their odds, even so - but even if they couldn't win, at least they had an opportunity to make a difference. A chance to have it be said that humanity did not go down without a fight.

Jesse gathered up her tools, and went to work.

Bo checked the vitals of the priest they had rescued alongside Doctor Singh and adjusted the flow of the drip in his arm. Hispanic from the look of him and a member of the clergy from his clothing but that was as much as they knew, as despite appearing stable he had not regained consciousness. The medical team had speculated that whatever had happened to him went deeper than the physical and she certainly wished they had found time to investigate that chair contraption.

She remembered the Sci Fi movies of her youth, though it had never been her thing. A manifestation of a fear of loss of control suffered by its creators, she thought, who were usually members of societal or political demographics that held it by birthright. She'd had real inequalities to deal with at the time and the potential for the human race to be the subject of physical or genetic engineering of super-soldiers by an alien race wasn't one of them.

"A little short-sighted of me," Bo thought as she looked over to where Advent soldiers lay under sheets. The medical assistant looked at her while making a small noise of query, and she realised she must have spoken out loud. "Never mind," she continued with a grim laugh, "I am now aware that I missed a major opportunity for research which would have been of great help now." She rolled up her sleeves and headed to the sluice to wash.

"Octavia Butler, eat your heart out."

((Mostly in line with the others.

MC - Finish Improved Manufacturing Capacity and throw anything spare we manage to generated into Improved Research Capacity.

RC - Finish the Magnetic Weapons if possible and if we're lucky throw some spare into ADVENT Officer Autopsy, and if we're really, really lucky line up the ADVENT Trooper Autopsy for after that.

Bo will throw will throw in on the officer autopsy, Treat Injury is still +14. *crosses fingers* :? ))

One thing you could say for ADVENT - medical technologies on Earth had leapt forward by decades, if not a century or more - as well as the availability of it all. It was ADVENT's oft-trumpeted great success, in fact... the establishment of the gene therapy clinics, steadily working to scrub away humanity's ills, defects and informities. It was a change that X-Com was seemingly happy to share in, as Victor was up and around on a cast leg mere days after his break.

"Nicely done," he'd said to the other Team members, as he re-wired a metal-injection multi-mould. "I heard it all went pretty smooth. Get any good camera footage of ADVENT atrocity? About time we caught them on camera again..."

He takes on a hungry, wolfish look, contemplating the hunt for evil deeds.

((Vic'll assist with the Curse of the Manufacturing Project, once again, with his Craft Mech +3. Hoping for Mag Weps on the research!))

Session 15

+600xp for full-party posting.
+500xp for Stan and Bo.

* * *

The crew of the Avenger starts to avoid the Manufacturing Bay.

It’s nothing concrete. The members of Alpha spend plenty of time there themselves, working on the manufacturing capacity upgrades. But even they have noticed how often things just go wrong, from small equipment failures to strange noises that seem to come from within the very walls of the battered old ship. When a partially-assembled 3D printing module suddenly comes alive and starts printing lines of molten titanium on Daud’s arm, it hardly seems surprising. Fortunately, Stan is there to pull the override before the scout suffers permanent scarring.

The word “haunted” starts to be heard in the corridors and the crew lounge.

FROM: MARY RANMA, X-COM MEDICAL LEAD
TO: MEMBERS, PLANNING COMMITTEE
CC: CENTRAL
RE: Research/Manufacturing Progress Report, Week Ending June 28, 2035

I am taking my turn on the production report, although it would appear that most of the Planning Committee considers Medical a mere adjunct valued only for its ability to produce field medical kits. Doctor Effiong’s efforts on the autopsy of the ADVENT officer have been exemplary, and I am certain that Doctor Tygan will have a significant report to share very shortly. We have even been able to successfully analyze the remains of the ADVENT trooper that the team brought back. The biological data is quite fascinating, though I believe that the information gleaned about their body armor will be of more immediate use to our front-line soldiers.

The Manufacturing Capacity upgrade is complete, despite the apparent best efforts by Alpha to destroy the Manufacturing Bay and themselves in the process. Hopefully work on the Research Bay will be more… productive.

Base rolls:
X-COM Research Capacity: roll 7, +3 (Darius Singh) (10 points total in Magnetic Weapons [completed], 5 points in ADVENT Officer Autopsy [completed], 5 points in ADVENT Trooper Autopsy [completed], 3 points in Motion Scanner). One Mag Pistol prototype and one mag ammunition produced.
Bo: ADVENT Officer Autopsy: +14 vs. DC15, roll 20 (Critical Success). +3 to project. +500xp
Henderson: Magnetic Weapons: +8 vs. DC20 (indirect skill), roll 19 (Success). +1 to project.

X-COM Manufacturing Capacity: roll 1 (10 points total in Improved Manufacturing Capacity [completed], 3 points in Improved Medical Capacity).
  • Daud: +8 vs. DC15, roll 1 (Critical Failure). Offset by Stanley.
  • John: +7 vs. DC15, roll 7 (No result).
  • Jesse: +16 vs. DC15, roll 8 (Success). +1 to project.
  • Stan: +15 vs. DC15, roll 19 (Critical Success). Offsets Daud, +500xp.
  • Vic: +3 vs. DC15, roll 3 (No result).
X-COM Medical Capacity: 4 (4 new medikits produced this week)

I made an executive decision and held off on the production of the modified sword (MC1) and the surgery kit (MC2) so that you could finish the Manufacturing Capacity upgrade. You should be able to make both of those easily next week, given the extra die of production.
