Brand - Monk Gently

Brand looked over the newly secured vehicle with a satisfied smile that lasted until Acantha dropped to the ground next to him, at which point he shouted with surprise and his hand snapped to his pistol. He paused upon noticing who it was, his face frozen for a few moments in a surprised grimace.

"You nearly got shot, scary girl, what were you thinking?" He slowly unwound (or mostly unwound, given his company) and shook his head. "Well, since it's your damn fault, look around for my heart will you? Leapt right out of my throat when you did that."

"You assume you could draw before I gutted you," Acantha retorted, though the tone of her voice was even her face betrayed the faintest of hint of a smug smirk, which slowly broadened into a mirthless smile, "and if I found your heart there's no saying you'd get it back. I am untrustworthy, after all."

"No," Brand replied, "You're mysterious and a little crazy is what you are. Doesn't mean you're a liar, just means that you're hard to figure out." He exhaled again and shook his head with a grin.

"If my presence is not required," Zeevja said shortly after leaving the hab. "I believe there will be a mass held at the cathedral shortly. I would like to attend."

She smiled fondly. "When I Served in the Navy, I would always visit the chapel when I knew we were heading into battle. I was hardly alone - oh, how clearly I remember that scent of fear and desperation! - but it is a ritual that appears to have served me well enough. It is only fitting I do the same now, no? Perhaps I shall join you later, but if not you'll likely find me back here."

The psyker grinned happily, then turned around and parted ways with her two companions.

"As you will," replied the Tech priest. "Let us seek the blessing of as many faces of the Omnissiah as we might."

***

The Temple wasn't wholly welcoming to those not initiated in the mysteries. It didn't shun anyone, particularly; it was simply that those without augmentation or holy knowledge were barely noticed. Servitors rolled on by, only taking notice of folk to avoid them; Tech-priests hunched over their consoles, refusing to be disturbed by sound or presence. From the faint crackle of static in the air from the giant generators, to the impossibly vast hall maintained with anti-gravity units, the feel was of something majestic - but old, remote and uncaring.

It didn't seem to affect Severian much, he being a creature that regarded emotions such as awe as irrelevant. No; he simply marched into the place as if he owned it, as if the oppressive, lofty atmosphere did not touch him. He simply waited, wordless, standing to one side until the Magos was ready to receive him. And when he did, and the cone of privacy had been activated, he had this to say:

***Identity of culprit found/Victus Magnus nobleman responsible/Psyker attacks, distribution of corrupt artifacts/Assault on Victus Mansion T minus 45 hours/Strike team to disable Shield/Inquisitorial attack to commence soon after/Authorised to request aid technological-military***

Finishing gathering supplies, the team prepared themselves for the final assault. Three combat servitors arrived from the Temple of Omnissah and were loaned to Severian. Brand and Zevja slipped into disguise of V.I.S. Caterers while Kastian made final contact with Inquisitor Sol.

The team loaded themselves into the catering van Brand had purloined and proceeded to make the hour and 45 minute drive to Victus Manor in the Upper Spire. Arriving, Acantha and Kastian slipped out before the van pulled up at the gate and proceeded to infiltrate the Manor. While Brand and Zevja kept the guards busy at the gate, Acantha proceeded to quietly kill the patrolling guards - one by one with Kastian watching and covering her back. The gate guards got suspicious of Brand and Zeevja and attacked. They were quickly mowed down by the team.

The team found the shield generator and was able to shut it. Signaling the Inquistior of the shields deactivation, the Inquistior landed a shuttle full of stormtroopers and Sisters of Battle into the manor's courtyard. A massive battle broke as the team fought there way into the manor and attempted to locate and capture Victus Magnus. Fighting floor to floor, the team searched the manor for Victus's location without success. Backtracking, the team found a secret way hidden in a wine closet and proceeded into Victus lair. Assaulted by close combat servitor and sentry guns, the team fought there way into Victus laboratory where they encountered heresy in it's extreme. Two guardian deamons and a couple more combat servitors greeted them in a most vicious fashion. The battle raged for several minutes until the unclean things were put down.

A hellish sight greeted them - a daemonic engine of some sort and the lab of a mad man. A brief examination lead them to another door and there they found Victus. However, he was ready for them and threw an archtech device at them - a vortex grenade! Diving for cover, the team barely avoided annihilation as the ancient device ignited unleashing a vortex of pure warp energy. Separated from the team by the vortex, Acantha pursued Victus into the next room only to be greeted by another combat servitor. Battling for her life, she could only watch as Victus stepped into a Chaos Gate and escaped. The rest of the team arrived and put the tainted combat servitor down. The Chaos Gate slowly deactivated leaving the team battered and defeated for the moment. The only thing left was to search the lab for any clues and to destroy the warp tainted items.

Aftermath!

A thorough search of Victus's laboratory revealed he had been exploring the tainted powers of the warp for awhile. The various texts the team found were heretical in nature and included treaties on daemons, sorcery, and chaos rituals. They found dissected remains of biological experiments gone awry from exposure to the ruinous power of the warp. More disturbing was the Chaos Gate powered by the daemon infused machine located within the heart of the lab. This was a dangerous thing and to be found in the Hive - imagine the destruction if the Gate was opened to allow the ruinous creatures from the warp into the sanctum of humanity. It was obvious that Victus was no mere socialite, but a powerful sorcerer and dedicated servant of the ruinous powers.

The Inquisitional Stormtroopers and Sisters of the Ebon Chalice cleansed and purified the security forces and servants of Victus with bolter and flame so that none survived. His manor was systematically searched and all items of a dubious nature were confiscated and transported back to Tri-corn for further identification and study. The Chaos Gate and daemonic engine were destroyed - the daemon within the machine was sent back to the unholy realm of the warp by hand of the Grey Knights. Victus's Manor was put to flame leaving no trace of chaos.

The Nobles of the Magnus family quickly disavowed Victus and put as much distance between themselves and Victus so no blowback from his activities could be linked to them. An intervention from Ordos Xenos spared many of the immediate family from interrogation, but several more distant family members, associates, and friends spent time in the Tri-corn interrogation chambers.

Inquistor Sol - Very well done Team Vigilant. Though the capture of Victus would have been better. However, I... you could not have foreseen that Victus would have access to a Chaos Gate nor would have even imagined such a thing would be present in the Hive. Victus was much stronger than any of us imagined. He has but temporarily escaped the justice of the Emperor's Holy Inquisition.

We have been divining his purpose for passing out the warp tainted relics.

*at this point, the Inquisitor lays a book upon the table. The book is sealed within a clear case that is inlaid with hexagramatic wards*

This book... The Magnus Nocens Telum... describes a warp infused device that is capable of much destruction. The device was brought unto life millenniums ago by a daemon and was used to destroy worlds, enslave mankind, and bring to life the psyker potential in all humans. According to the book, the treacherous Elder got involved and defeated the daemon. They broke the device into seven parts and scattered them throughout the universe so it would never be used again.
This unholy book describes the rituals needed to find the parts, how to assemble the parts, and how to use the device. Such a thing MUST never be allowed to happen!

* The Inquistor slams his mailed fist down upon the table cracking it*

Victus somehow stumbled upon this book and begin enacting the rituals needed to find the parts. The tainted relics were given out to unsuspecting victims and when the ruinous power within took the victim, its location was recorded by the daemonic machine and inputted within the codifier that was in the lab. Using the calculations from these events, the codifier created a star map.

* The Inquisitor turns and nods to a tech priest and the tech priest activates a holo globe so that an image appears above the briefing table*

We took this map and superimposed it upon this section of our galaxy. It points to a location in the Halo Stars. Not the most tamed section of this sector. More disturbing is the report of a spacehulk appearing at this location 3.5 days ago. The spacehulk has been identified as Spacehulk Democles. This spacehulk has been recorded as appearing every 50 years within the Halo Stars and lingering for 66 days before disappearing again. The spacehulk is approximately 33 kilometers long with a width of 10 kilometers at its widest point.

We believe that this was Victus's destination to acquire the first part of this weapon. You will be boarding a shuttle shortly to travel to the spacehulk, board it, and locate Victus and the part. Victus Magnus is classified Hereticus Extremis. He is to be terminated with extreme prejudice.

Garm - Ayram

Post by Valas » Tue Apr 17, 2012 10:51 pm

« on: Jun 3, 2010, 3:12AM» Repost

Garm knew the operation hadn't gone exactly as planned, and he knew that the existence of the chaos gate could not have been accounted for, but he still felt like he had failed the Inquisitor by allowing Victus to escape while he still had breath in his body. Garm was expecting some sort of reprimand from Sol Dane, but there were matters far more important than that to worry about right now.

The Inquisitor's briefing had left Garm white faced. Dane had just described to them a threat of unthinkable proportions to the Imperium, and that he was making it their responsibility to see the threat neutralized. A heavier burden Kastian could scarcely imagine. It was enough pressure to break a man.

But here he was also being offered a second chance to stop Victus like he should have before. For as much as Garm felt the pressure, He also felt that his pride as a soldier and servant of The Emperor was on the line. And while that may pale in comparison to the threat that Victus hung over the Imperium, it was possibly even more of a motivation for Kastian to protect that pride. Pride is a dangerous thing to embrace, some might say, but it is also said that that Pride grants one the Armour and Blade of Contempt against the foes of mankind. And few weapons were as keen as these.

So, Kastian spoke only with grim purpose now that the Inquisitor had called for questions.

"Yes, inquisitor. My first question is simple: How long has the Space Hulk been present... How long will we have once we are inserted?"

Garm spared a quick glance at the rest of the team before continuing.

"The second is more of a concern. I have limited knowledge of these hulks, but is it true that the influence of the warp still lingers inside of them? I have heard that even the Astartes cannot stand such an influence for long without succumbing to madness."

Turning his gaze toward the now pale Kastian, Inquisitor Sol considers his question and answers

"Our records indicate that the spacehulk was first recorded as being seen in M39.141 by Imperial Naval scout. It has since then be recorded as appearing every 50 years. It reappeared 3.5 days ago. With the Emperor Blessing and no warp storms, you should be able to reach the area where it is at within 5 days. That should give you 57 days to explore and locate Victus and the device."

His expression turns grim when he considers Kastian's second question.

"Space hulks are the detritus of the warp; derelict ships compacted together along with asteroids and other less identifiable materials by the tides of that strange realm. Hulks range in size from a single abandoned escape pod to vast conglomerations easily out sizing all but the largest gas giants. Some space hulks serve as vessels for Orks or carry a deadly cargo of slumbering Genestealers, others hold much worse...

Space hulks frequently skim in and out of the warp as the result of spatial corruption caused by long exposure to the immaterium, or the weird interplay of still functioning warp engines throughout the hulk’s mass. Space hulks are dangerous to visit, as their existence in realspace is tenuous at best, to say nothing of the dangers they frequently hold, for who is to say how a given ship came to be part of a hulk? Was it abandoned and if so why? Do the security systems of an ancient vessel still function? Could plague still survive, waiting to infect others in the holds of an ancient ship?

Still, the Emperor Protects. Other questions?"

It's hard to disguise Severian's obvious interest. Although mechanical, the observant would note his back straightening incrementally, and the shutters of the focusing lenses of his mask widen a little. A hulk, a possible resting-place of who knows what long-lost or unfathomable technologies? Bound to be a draw for a Techpriest.

Still, his mind is drawn to other questions. "It is strange that this has all happened as if from nowhere, driven by a single being. This Shoras Cartel is likely that this organization is how Victus was able to obtain the Magnus Nocens Telum. But... this seems an extraordinarily ambitious plan for one man. Has there been any signs that point to any agency sponsoring Victus?"
