Heroes of the Peloponnese Game Thread #3

So here they were. Tartarus.
Somehow, it was not quite as mind-shattering as Eleni had imagined. But that might have been her imagination's fault more than anything else - she had always been quite remarkably talented at letting the thing run wild. Regardless, as of this moment, no demons had yet managed to devour even a single one of her limbs . She could only consider this a win.
"I daresay he's been here long enough, Andreas. But I'm quite certain there isn't anything more we can do for him. I would prefer to worry about ourselves, at the moment."

"I prefer to worry what's inside these doors," Kataramene stated firmly. "We've just killed a couple of guards with shields as big as a feasting table, about to go into a fortress or something where they might be dozens more, and you want to talk about that fellow who pissed off Hades?"
"Seriously," she hefted her own shield, as the doors were pushed, "Can we leave philosophical discourse for when we're not fighting to stay whole?"

"All in favour of that!" said Polytropos, readying his shield and sword to creep inside. "I'm not messing with anyone stuck down here. Then Hades might stick US down here, and this place is the worst. I can see why all these things want to come to Greece now!"

Portals, Leonaidas hated them. He wondered how they ever were supposed to get back? He paused to think about the poor fellow they'd found chained. Would they end like him, each chained to some horrid patch of hell with their own personal demons coming to devour them every day? The loot had better be worth this, he muttered silently to himself.

// Sorry guys, I've yet again been scheduled to work Saturday. Just going to tell them to get lost if they do it again next week.

A legion lay dead at their feet, its fortress captured.
Eleni wasn't quite certain how to feel about that.
"So much for my vague notion that we might find common cause with these Tarterians," she said, as much to herself as to anyone. "It's difficult to parlay with an enemy quite so preoccupied with frothing at the mouth."
The sorceress shrugged. She supposed there was no harm in having tried. Just about any advantage, any ally, would be welcomed at this point. She was sure Zeus would not approve of their letting the cyclopses go free, but the gods had sent them against - to put things lightly - improbable odds.
"This place seems about as safe as places get around here," she said. "If there's anywhere we can use to rest and regroup, this is probably it. Though I'd prefer we still keep an eye out for angry Tarterians."

A defensible antechamber is chosen, and some food and shelter set up in short order. Polytropos, though, doesn't try and rest right away. Instead, he busies himself - dragging bodies to a spot nearby, gathering fallen weapons and stacking them upright against each other in makeshift tripods, and even using stuck spears to form a cross, on which he can hang one of the fallen Legionnaires of Tartarus.
It's clear what it is: a trophy. A monument to victory, and a statement to the defeated. Greeks were here, it said. Greeks fought, and Greeks won. Polytropos nods to himself, seemingly pleased with his unrefined handiwork. It says... Greeks kicked ass.
"Damn right," he says to himself, nodding.

Between taking her turn at watching the entrance, Kataramene sat mostly watching Polytropos's endeavour. She nodded at Eleni's words, though. "This might make a hidey hole in extremis but I'm not sure how long it would be before the previous occupants regroup."
"We knew it was going to be tough, but I don't think either of us realised quite how relentless it would be." She shifted and sorted through her pack, seemingly counting. "I'm already through perhaps a quarter of my supplies, and it doesn't look like it will get any easier. Frontal assaults are heavy on us and our supplies, but who knows if there will be any way to replenish them here? So we can't string out this search too long either." The woman ran her fingers through her long, thick hair and sighed. "We're stuck between a balance of hammering our way through and preserving what we have for a long fight, and I'm damned if I know what's best."
Looking over at Polytropos's monument she gave it a critical examination and then nodded. "Well done, my love. Say it with bodies appears to be our motto, but maybe not as a wedding gift to my mother, hmmm?"
