Slade looked over the dead frost giant guards. They had fought ferociously, but had gone down all the same. He wondered if the noise of the fight had been heard by those deeper in the fortress? Perhaps not; the earlier guardians, such as wolves, had been dispatched without apparently alerting the inner rings. Maybe their luck would hold.

A test of Will?

Twice in a day Pius faith and knighthood code was tested. The young knight had no problem however dealing with these situations.

The group visited the temple. As they entered, they witnessed something unsettling: A priest was being the subject of corporal punishment by whip. Pius offered to take the man's place as it seemed to be the only way to resolve the situation. However the priests refused to let another person suffer the consequences of one's actions. Pius had no choice but to accept their decision.

While exploring the frozen mountains and fighting creatures like giants, trolls and ice things the group found one of the monster slowly dying and obviously in a lot of pain. The creature was obviously of an evil nature but there was no way to heal it. Yet, something had to be done. In the eyes of Pius and according to the code, knights of Helm had the duty to prevent or ease the suffering of any living creature. So Pius killed the monster. He had been unable to help the priest but at least this time he was able to help.

Pius was aware that except for Amathain, the others in the group had little interest in such actions but that was to be expected...

"We've encountered a bewilderingly large variety of creatures in our time here. This surely can't be normal for the area. Have the giants, or the power behind the giants, amassed such a mixed force? and to what end? Even as we clear the place of this nascent army, I find it troubling that it came to be at all."

Suula looks up from rearranging the contents of her magic bag. The clinking of many coins, metal artifacts, the rustling of what sounds like chainmail and paper... "I don't know. I mean, did we just rob a dragon's hoard? There were big dragons... and we just took it... so, maybe it's actually dragons here? Why would the giants leave all this valuable stuff lying around in a pool if these dragons were just pets?" She holds up the gold-plated crown. "Is this supposed to be a dragon-pet chewing toy?"

She then pulls out a sack from her bag, and shakes it - the unmistakeable sound of coin, a lot of coin, coming forth. "Because these aren't. There's enough here to make life size dummies of all of us, out of bandages."

"With the way we're getting through them we'll probably need it," Shaani said, doing much the same as Suula but with a rueful expression. "I mean, we are supposed to make a bit of a profit from adventuring, right? I know we're here because of allegiance to our patrons and the good of the land and yada yada, but still."

She threw a crafty smirk at Suula. "Of course some of us may have found their prize already and will doubtless settle down to a long life with their chosen in the snow. If they get over what ails them, of course."

"Those trolls and whatnot by the foot of the glacier didn't strike me as being in league with one another," Nihmri said with something vagiely like a shrug. She was, it seemed, experiencing some difficulty adjusting to her new armour. "The yeti and the big ugliest sure seemed to enjoy tearing each other apart. If they were supposed to be part of an army, I don't think it's a very good one."

"Eh? I'm not ill, lass." Toric paused and looked at Suula. "Oh." "As fer them snow giants, I don't think they're smart enough to be in any army, Nih. I think them trolls were promised something by the giants fer their help - maybe even the stuff we took from here." He shrugged and looked at Nih. "I'd offer ye a hand, lass, but I feel ye'd take it the wrong way. Just don't go tripping over yer feet 'cause I don't want to have to drag ye back to town."

The frost giant stronghold turned out to be a lot easier to clear than Slade had expected. The giants didn't have a very well organized defense, a number of rather isolated outposts that weren't close enough to signal or support each other to any degree. More surprising, no army of giants materialized out the rift. Slade kept expecting large bands, but all they ran into were small patrols. He couldn't help but wonder if large number of these frost giants had been out raiding or hunting and would have to be dealt with sometime in the future. Furthermore, they hadn't turned up much of any evidence as to who or how this unrest was being organized. The others assured him they'd given the place a good going over while he was out scouting the rift, but he had his doubts.

From what they had recovered, it seemed fire giants were the next stop. Slade wasn't enthused about the possibilities there. While he had some minor magical protection vs. cold, he had nothing vs. fire, so knew he'd have to tread very lightly on the next mission.

Toric stood outside of the inn and glared at the door with his fists on his hips. He spat into the snow and grumbled, "Bloody ungrateful wench! Sure her inn was a bit wrecked, but we kept it from melting in a pool of acid! One'd think we caused that damned portal to appear in there! Bah! We don't need her business anyway; there's no ale and I'm getting tired of turnips. I imagine she'll try to blame us for the giant attacks too! 'If only they hadn't come, we would still be getting supplies.' Stupid humans." He turned around and stalked off, the snow on his head turning into steam.
