Devotion Campaign Planning and Discussion Thread

Slade slowly sat up and looked around. It all started to come back to him. They'd dispatched some assorted creatures on the way to the fire giant fortress and breached the gate. In a series of battles, they'd slain all the giants and allies they encountered and made their way into dungeons below. More battles and more dead giants. He remembered something about a portal and a chaotic fight with fire elementals and related creatures and flames. He must have died. His clothes smelled of smoke. Someone muttered prayers and the pain dissipated. Sadly, the painful memories remained.

"A dragon? Where'd they get a bloody dragon? 'Least it was stupid as dragons go. I don't know if'n we could have defeated it otherwise. And that blasted Dwarf! I'm starting to think he was one of them gray-ones, bastards all of 'em." Toric stared around him, then noticed Slade sitting down. He put a hand on Slade's shoulder and asked, "Ye okay, Elf? Ye gave us a bit of a scare back there."

"Sorry I didn't get to you in time," Shanni said, apologetically. "When something happens to make us fight on two fronts .... well, usually end up finding while I'm aiding one of you that someone else, usually too far away for me to reach quickly, gets into trouble. And you have to be able to touch folk to bless them that way." She sighed a little.
"We have another problem though. I know we got all this stuff but ... is it really best to go back to Gateway right now?" she asked the group. "Wouldn't we be best pursuing our target before he gets away? Just a little concerned here that he'll slip our grasp if we take the time needed to go back and then return up here."
"Though ..." She looked at Suula and then at Gareth, and then back at Suula. "... there's some baggage we might be better off getting rid of quickly somewhere before it becomes an obstacle."

Suula smirks. "I don't often see this side of you, Sis," she says. "Greedy, vindictive and jealous. I would have expected you to be over the moon about saving some unfortunate people, but you're pulling cartwheels to make things worse for them. I'm almost proud."
"Anyway," she adds, turning serious. "Can't be helped. That last mess took a lot out of us and damn near killed Slade. If we're going to hunt the one bringing these Hellementals to our little world, we're going to need to be at our best. We're going to need all the help that sad little frontier town can sell us."

"I must concur, although time is of the essence, we must be well prepared. No doubt the closer we get to the den of our enemy, the greater the danger his minions will represent. It will also afford us the opportunity to return these two former prisoners to civilization, rather than bringing them with us into further danger or cutting them loose in the wilderness."

"Oh, choices, choices," Nihmri said, smiling. "On the one hand, we needs must make haste. On the other, I would very much prefer not to die. Hm."
The priestess tapped her chin, pondering this question thoroughly.
"It's a tricky one, but I think that, in this particular instance, I shall opt for the latter."

Death. Toric had witnessed it in the others, but never himself until that fateful battle with the water elementals. One minute he was swinging away, the next his lungs filled with water and before he knew it, he was in Moradin's Halls. The God greeted him with a sad smile and waved behind Toric. "Yer time isn't up, lad. Back with ye." With that, Toric felt himself pulled violently back into the land of the living. He awoke with a concerned Shanni leaning over him, slapping him on the cheek. "Come on, Dwarf! Wake up!" he heard as he groggily came to his sense. He pushed Shanni's hand away and carefully got to his feet. He closed his eyes and swayed slight, struggling to stay standing and overcome the weakness that washed over him. He sighed as he was healed, but he felt as if a part of his soul was missing. He hoped with time he would either find the missing piece or that his soul would heal without it. He heard a voice in his head telling him to be patient: healing takes time and he would heal. He smiled to himself as he gathered up his equipment and followed the others.

They'd cleared the fire giants fortress and dungeons. Now, they stood before a door reputed to lead into the lair of the sorcerer said to be behind all these woes. Slade didn't care much for sorcery, and he would shed no tears after putting an arrow through his heart. The problem would be dealing the various elemental creatures and traps that seemed to be at this man's beck and call. Double-checking his arrows, he prepared to follow these others on.
