"Am I going to wake up?"

Pius was confused to say the least about the current situation. Defending the widow and the orphan was something he had trained for. Charging into battle or holding a doorway to allow his friends to fall back or die trying was also among his duties. Diplomacy however was not his forte. Not that he could easily get upset or start a brawl he could however easily get annoyed or bored would the talks last too long. To escape this kind of predicament, he would often follow Slade around in an attempt to prevent any misconduct.

As they reached the gate of a settlement they were stopped by the usual suspicious guards who asked their names and wanted to make sure they were not undead. Pius found that a bit odd but understandable as the safety of the people should come first.

Later they met with a tiny lady, perhaps a gnome, hobbit, gelfling, brownie or fey of some kind. She acted as everything was find. There was no threat to worry about. No undead reported.

Once they met with the mayor, he practically fled the room.

After that Pius stopped trying to make any sense of what was going on. He quietly followed his friends thinking that at any moment he would be waking up...

Slade scouted around the small town and wasn't particularly impressed. Not many people were to be seen and there seemed to be only half-a-dozen guards of dubious quality. The town relied on opposing steep bluffs to prevent access, but anyone with a grapple could probably sneak in. It didn't appear the dead had been very active in the area, which was a plus. There was no sign of the contact they were supposed to meet, other than a unpaid bar tab. This was hardly shaping up to be an easy mission as some were muttering about a lich in a forest ruins. He wondered if it would be wiser to let sleeping dogs lie.

As the others settled in for the night, Toric went to the kitchen and returned Suula's bowl with a sheepish grin. "Sorry, lass, 'twas so good I forgot to leave the bowl!" He hooked his fingers into his belt and looked around, whistling. Eventually the innkeeper sighed and gestured at some food crates. "If'n you're gonna be bothering me, go unpack those crates." Toric grinned and and set to the task, all the while asking the innkeeper about her past, about the town, about the Harper fellow they were looking for, and about that old crone who insisted everything was right with the town while sneaking glances to admire her charms. Despite the way her backside would twitch just so as she washed the dishes, Toric's mind soon wandered and settled on a golden-hair scout far to the north. He frowned and finished his task. After saying goodnight to the innkeeper, he headed upstairs, a frown still on his lips. Maybe after all of this was over it was time for him to retire? He sighed. Time to think about that later, preferably after the undead were dealt with.

"Am I the only one still wondering where in the world the mayor has ran off to?" Nihmri said, through a mouth half-filled with porridge. "I mean, we've seen pretty much every place worth seeing in this quaint little hamlet, and we've spotted neither him nor his shadow. It's like he just went and vanished into nothing. Poof. Strangest thing."

"By no means, but I'm not sure what we can do about it. Short of searching house by house we seem unlikely to find him, and I don't think we've reached quite that level of desperation. We will just have to stay vigilant for anything strange happening."

"Auugh, the Mayor's a grown adult, he's survived this long in this little hovel, I'm sure he's fine. He's not who we need to see!" Suula grumpily insisted, clutching another finished bowl. "It's Calephos we're missing, and chances are, he scampered off to these ruins the shopkeeper mentioned and never came back. We should have asked that crazy sage about those, instead of letting him waffle on about undead kings and missing pages."

"It's polite to find out what you can nicely," Shanni grumbled at her sisters suggestion "I think the cat is out of the box on keeping who we might be quiet but something is not right here and we need to ... well try and look naive I think. That way people might underestimate us."

She paused. "Of course that's taking some things for granted but the principle still applies."

Crypts, crypts, and more crypts. Oh, and don't forget the undead, Toric thought to himself. At least this one had some useful items for the party since the others didn't follow his lead and destroy everything. Maybe there was a lesson to be learned in that? Or maybe it was just gas. He'd think about it over an ale back at the tavern. For now, the party had to decide how to divide the new gear appropriately. It also came to light that Pius was literally a man-at-arms, what with his half-dozen or so weapons. Toric shook his head and looked at Pius. "Lad, ye shoulda said ye were carrying all of that steel. We coulda sold it back in Lord Dhent's city and got ye somethin' better. Now we're bickering o'er who should get what and that ain't good." He sighed and turned to Shanni. "Lass, I got an ax with a minor enchantment*, but it looks to be good against followers of Chaos, which I believe them undead are the epitome of such. It's yers if'n ye want it 'cause I like me Planar Ax." He patted the ax strung across back with pride.

//*It's +1 EB, but +4 against Chaos. Mine's +3 EB and 1d6 damage vs Outsiders I think.
