Kalen Acirelle

Post by kylerayner7 » Sun May 14, 2017 5:33 pm

Kalen averted his eyes as his new companions ascended the stairs to the Belching Bastard. To say they looked worse for wear was an understatement. They were battered and bruised and only half of them on their feet. He shuddered as he saw Quiet and Thelandra brought inside on what looked like an overturned table. Upon seeing their wounds, he had to look away. What would Falmer have said if he could see him now? He had volunteered to bring the boy back safely to town, which seemed so necessary at the time. Kalen thought now of the pride he felt upon noticing the boy's admiration of him. Now seeing his companions in front of him, the sickening taste of shame was strong in his mouth.

"If you were half the warrior the boy thought you were, perhaps you could have done something to help. Instead you left to babysit while your companions did all the hard work. Some knight you are..." A soft voice inside his head sneered.

Kalen shook his head momentarily and approached to see how he could help.

((This is sort of a test for now, GW. Thanks for the offer, though! Might take you up on it later if we get people to use the forums more.

In the mean time, I invite people use this topic for discussing things they'd like their characters to do between sessions. We'll probably spend most of tonight's session in town, so you'll have opportunities to explore your options there. This is also a good place to ask if you've got questions about the world, the system, or Fantasy Grounds.))

((The purpose of this post is threefold. For a start, we might be able to use this thread to get some basic shopping out of the way - or at least speed the process along. Secondly, if you're planning on doing something more in-depth,like consulting with someone on the problems you're trying to solve, or maybe recruit someone to your cause, then laying the groundwork for that here allows me to better prepare for the next session. Lastly, it also serves as a quick reference of the services available to you in town.))

You leave Bryce in the - hopefully - capable hands of Artorys, junior priest of the Blessed Empress. Once outside the temple, you are once again accosted by the mad man who appears to have set up camp at the foot of the hill. "Where is the boy?" he asks, with fury in his eyes. "Have you delivered him into the arms of the fiends who dwell within? You fools! You have brought him to his doom!"

The shrill sound of his mad rantings fades behind you as you return to town. The sun stands high in the sky; it is perhaps half an hour or so past noon. Somewhere below your feet, the mad alchemist hides in his lair, along with his army of mutated minions. With the advance provided to you by Lita, you have an opportunity to stock up and prepare for the challenges ahead, but it seems likely that the Rat King will not be standing still, either.

You take a moment to go over your options, recalling the directions that Lita and Tofdir provided to you earlier.

Not far from the temple, along the northern edge of town, there stands an old hunting lodge. The sign above the door reveals it to be Solith Supplies - a favorite of local hunters, explorers, and ruin-delvers. This would be the place to go if you are looking for bows, ammunition, travelling supplies, and light armor.

The local blacksmith is not too far from the center of town. You remember that its owner is none other than Bryce's father, who remains unaware of his son's ailment. Given the sorts of people you've come across on the streets of Kendrick's Cove, you imagine that there is a sizable market for weapons and armor around here.

Next to the docks, you will find the harborside market. Most of the vendors here sell food and other essentials, but you recall hearing that it is also where the travelling Naga have set up shop. You're not sure what they have to offer, but it may prove interesting, and perhaps you might stumble across something else worthy of note.

The grove at the center of town is home to the druid named Rith. He has been described to you as a rather unpleasant sort, but his potions and expertise may just be worth the price of his presence.

Finally, there is Caliyah's Curiosities, just across from the Belching Bastard. It is home to the closest thing that Kendrick's Cove has to a local sage, a tabaxi alchemist who is known to value her privacy. She has a number of items in her collection that she may be willing to part with, and a great deal of knowledge, as well. Quiet notes that his people are more likely to be interested in barter than in gold - a collector such as Caliyah would likely be the one to seek out if you were trying to figure out what to do with one of the more unusual items you've come across in your travels.

Kalen sighed audibly as the party made its way down the temples steps towards the town, the crazed old man's words still ringing in his ears. Had they done the right thing? The temple seemed the best option, but the lack of experience of the head priest worried him. Not to mention the fact that Bryce now had to remain within the temple until a cure could be found.

"I do not like the idea of our young friend being confined to that temple. The priest means well but the boy's father will be worried sick."

He glanced between the faces of the party's members.

"We ought to tell the boy's father. I will be the one to bring him the news though if any wish to see the Blacksmith's wares, they are welcome to accompany me. Perhaps it would be a good idea for some of us to visit the alchemist or the druid. They may not be the most reliable residents in town according to the waitress, but surely they must have some information on how to combat the creatures we face."

Kalen waited patiently for the others to respond.

"As yet I feel no need for the services of a blacksmith," Thelandria responded. "I am prepared to visit the driud and alchemist as I feel the services they have to provide what will be of greater use to us." She gestured towards Quiet. "Perhaps if we attempt to bargain for items to aid us we may also be able to illicit information that will do the same."

The plot appears to have thickened.

You are not, it seems, the first to come looking for this mad wererat and his mysterious accomplice. Not so very long ago, Coran Tenevir and Emeria Vallejo were a pair of highly respected scholars from the Grand College of Almyris, far across the sea. They journeyed to this part of the world a number of months ago, for reasons that are not entirely clear. What you do know is that they were seeking an ancient dwarven relic - the Herald of the Storm - and that they believed this item to be somewhere in the vicinity of Kendrick's Cove. Going by what you've discovered so far, you suspect they might have found something else instead - something far more dangerous.

All this and more, you learn from speaking to Sylana, the dangerously inebriated mage you encountered the previous night. She seems somewhat more humble, now, nursing a headache and opting for water instead of ale. Though she spent weeks combing the coast for signs of her grandmother, her efforts have met with very little success. As far as she could tell, Coran and Emeria's trail turned cold at Caliyah's, who appears to be the last person to have seen them. Sylana has spent most of the nights since feeling sorry for herself, wallowing in her failure in lieu of returning home empty-handed. But now, with your aid, she may finally have an opportunity to learn the truth - however dreadful it may turn out to be.

By the time dinner is served - an unappetising helping of some manner of fish-based broth - it is clear that you have a number of options available to you. Sylana seems eager to be underway, but she will answer any questions you might have. Quiet has already decided to spend the rest of the evening brewing draughts of healing, while Jemmy and Zion recall making the beginnings of a trade with Caliyah, the local alchemist and artificer. She seemed especially interested in the largely-incoherent journals penned by Coran, the mad wererat, but she is not one to deal in gold and silver. Among the trinkets and curiosities in her workshop, you noticed a number of scrolls and wands which might be of interest, as well a few other items that might be more difficult to categorise, like the device she was working on when you first entered.

You have at least an hour or two before Quiet finishes his brewing. Tofdir appears to be rather vexed by all these delays - the longer the hour, the twitchier he becomes - but it means the rest of you have a chance to deal with some lesser business in town, should you choose to do so.

((This is a quick-ish post to go over Quiet's potential Wild Shape options.

At 2nd level, the limitations on your forms are: no higher than CR1/4, and no creatures with swimming or flying speeds. I'm willing to relax this a bit and say you can know the shapes of creatures with swimming of flying speeds, but you lack the instinctive knowledge required to actually swim or fly as beasts do until you reach higher levels. This opens up snakes, among other things.

Here's some creatures that fit the bill that Quiet might reasonably be familiar with. Not all of them are from the Monster Manual, as I have pdfs of a few other books.
  • Spider (Tiny and giant. Stealthy, has climb speed)
  • Hadrosaurus (yes, the deeper jungles have dinosaurs)
  • Hyena (not strictly native to the region, but gnoll tribes brought them with them)
  • Rat (giant and tiny - you're all too familiar with these by now. Tempted to make this one a freebie.)
  • Lizard (tiny and giant varieties)
  • Frog (tiny and medium-sized varieties)
  • Poisonous Snake (giant and regular)
  • Constrictor Snake (regular only - but regular ones are already 'large')
  • Panther (Stealthy; can pounce)
  • Giant Centipede (poisonous; has climb speed. Also blindsight.)
  • Bat (giant and regular)
  • Flying Snake (rare, but usually friendly)
  • Festering Tick (as nasty as you'd expect)
  • Cats (of the common variety - not so common in the jungle, obviously, but you'll find them in port towns)
  • Velociraptor (the tiny kind)
I can provide you with stats for the ones you're interested in.))

(( Thanks for that, is a hadrosaur CR 1/4? And are these one he has met before in the jungle, or ones he will need to see before he can use the form))
