The truth is out there.

The devoted decided to investigate the nearby forest. The harper was still missing and so was the mayor. They were hoping to find some clues or perhaps more if the Gods were on their side.

They found a cabin. A man, who pretended to be the owner did not hesitate to threaten them would they not depart immediately. He probably did not know that knights are never intimidated by threats. Soon after the man and a large wolf who came out of nowhere attacked. Both were dispatched easily. In side the cabin they found a trapdoor leading to a basement. Perhaps a cellar commented Pius. A group of vampire was waiting and ambushed them. The encounter did not go well for the undead.

Clues found in the cabin pointed North. After a brief visit to the village, the group crossed a submerged area before entering another forest. Another vampire was waiting for them with a small army of humanoids. They eventually reached a barren area. There was no trace of their foes...

In pursuit of the missing harper, the group had ventured into the nearby woods. Here they came across a woodsman living in rustic cabin who turned violent when they didn't clear off from his land. He, and his dog, had been put down rather easily and his cabin explored, leading to an underground area and some vampires, also rather easily disposed of. It seemed these vampires had been controlling some members of the village. Exploring a nearby marsh led to encounters with more vampires and minions under their control. No clear evidence of who or what was overseeing these creatures was uncovered though, so the party prepared to search further. At least these things Slade could effectively shoot and kill, a pleasant change. Toric passed on a hand ax picked up from the dead woodsman, which proved a little more potent than the simple long sword Slade occasionally welded, so that was a welcome addition.

"So another nest of vampires, eh? Mayhaps this be that 'growing power' that stupid necromancer was talking 'bout. 'Least now we know what held the town in its thrall and why those guards were so...unusual. Shame 'bout the innkeeper; could tell she really like Cylare..." Toric looked around and spat on the ground. "Why do undead always pick such 'dead' locations? Bah! Let's get in there and burn 'em all out sos we can leave. Though if that old biddy says one more word 'bout us, I'm liable to drag her sorry hide here so she can see what evil really looks like. Maybe that'd shut her up."

"Are you seriously still talking about that?" Nihmri said, suppressing a sigh. "Is this a dwarf thing? Just not being able to let petty little grudges go, I mean. It's a dwarf thing, isn't it?"

"This place is barren, how are we going to find footprints here."

I am having some internet problems here. Crossing fingers. Also I hope that none of you is in the hurricane Matthew's range.

"Tread carefully, no doubt the one that escaped has warned its compatriots against our arrival. Expect traps and ambushes in abundance."

"I don't think we'll need to find footprints, Pius." Suula wrung out her robe, and shook a weed off her shortsword... pointing it at a trail of brown-water puddles and splashes, some new and some old, marking a path up the ground. "This bunch may walk invisible, but they're sure not subtle..."

Wet and bedraggled Shanni sighed deeply. "Subtle or not, any where has to be better than this." She similarly wrung the worst out of her cloak. "I suppose a fire is too much to hope for."

The party had tracked down and destroyed more vampires and various undead minions in the marsh. They'd even managed to collect a bit of loot which Slade hoped would sell for a tidy sum once they got back to civilization. They'd also picked up a few scrolls which might hold some clues to the next step in identifying and dealing with whatever was behind these various undead outbreaks. Slade hoped it wasn't the rumored lich; those were incredibly powerful creatures from the stories he heard, though perhaps with the collection of paladins and clerics they had, they might overcome such a creature. He'd rather not have to find out.
